DESIGN NAME: Glass Museum of Hsinchu City
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Interior Design
INSPIRATION: Geographically, Hsinchu is exceptionally rich in glass natural resources. The building of the Glass Museum of Hsinchu City was constructed in 1936. At the beginning, the building operated as the Hsinchu state autonomy house, which had been used as the guesthouse and banquet hall to the Japanese royal. After several changes of the function, the building became the current Glass Museum of Hsinchu City.Considering the history of the building and its current function as the only museum of glass artwork in Taiwan, as well as its meaningful past and the uniqueness, the original appearance of the building should be restored in a certain degree. At the same time, the space could be opened up for implantation of the new concept of modern exhibition.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The visual elements of the facilities in the newly designed exhibition area apply a minimal white tone to set off the purity of “glass” without overshadowing the historical building. Therefore, the newly implanted space of the exhibition becomes the complement. “The craft and art of glass ” returns to the main role.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The space for the temporary exhibitions on the ground floor is separated and presented in two themes and areas. The characteristics of glass are used as the fundamental keys of designing the two areas. The formation of glass is from liquid to solid, from high temperature to annealing. The glass could be transparent for transmission, or opaque for reflection and refraction. These interesting and distinguished characteristics of glass could be conceptualized and showcased in the design of the atmospheres and the presentations of the two areas.
The space of the permanent exhibition on the second floor intentionally represents the remaining arch, stairways and round windows of the old buildings. The originally sealed traditional windows are all reopened to form a spectacular background. At the same time, the natural lights will be led in to pass through the crystal-clear glass artworks. With the display boards and booths in white-tone, the “glass” becomes the focus of the exhibition.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in November 2015 and finished in May 2018 in Taiwan, and was opened at Hsinchu City in Taiwan from Octorber 2018 to date.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The visual wall of the lobby on the ground floor is designed and constructed with glass sticks, which belong to raw material of glass, and glass balls, which are recycled and reprocessed. The wall gloriously presents the main visual logo, which is freshly designed for the museum. Furthermore, the wall symbolizes one of the themes in the permanent exhibition, which is “the recycling economy of glass”.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: This project requests a comprehension of the raw materials for glass production and their characteristics as well as the progress and techniques of glass production. This comprehension becomes the basic of the conception and the methods for the exhibition space design.
CHALLENGE: The challenge of this project is how to implant an exhibition space exclusively for glass into a historical building. We worked on integrating the newly implanted exhibition space into the original historical building without remodeling the structure and the exterior of the building. Our goal is to transform the limitation into a vantage.
