| DESIGN NAME: The Trillium PRIMARY FUNCTION: Multifunctional Chair INSPIRATION: I got my inspiration from a flower ornament. As an interior designer, I wanted to use the shape of this ornament to a relaxing and multi-functional chair in a modern ambiance. Creating the mechanism of this chair was a real challenge that I managed to overcome and this elegant chair became a reality. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The Trillium has an individual, minimalist, modern, and unique shape reflecting the softness, beauty and simplicity of the Trillium flower. It can be used in indoor and outdoor spaces. The purpose of this design is to transform a regular to a relaxing or long chair in two simple movements reflecting a sophisticated design while maintaining its elegance and appeal. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The chair is made of three cushions, two of them are attached and move together. Using a simple rotational move, the seat cushion in the regular configuration is moved forward around the front axle, and will become a leg rest in the long chair configuration (opposite side). The backrest and the third cushion attached to it (in the lower position) are turned forward as well around the back axle, and they will become the seat cushion (opposite side) and the backrest in the long chair configuration. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The first prototype design was initiated in 2017 and went through multiple modifications in order to reach high level of durability, stability, resilience, and finesse. PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The chair is made entirely from high-quality stainless steel (grade 2507), which include all apparent and non-apparent parts. The structure of the seat and the backrest is made of stainless steel, with crossed belts and multi-layered sponge covered with fabric or leather. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: In a regular chair configuration, the dimensions are: length 1300mm, width 650mm, height 950mm. In a long chair configuration, the dimensions are: length 1420mm, width 650mm, height 820mm TAGS: Multi-functional, simple, modern, interesting, individual, minimalist RESEARCH ABSTRACT: - CHALLENGE: The main challenge encountered during the development of the chair was to ensure stability and durability while safeguarding the finesse and the artistic quality. This was overcome by increasing the diameter of the stainless steel tube. Moving forward, I will consider using different materials (e.g. aluminum instead of stainless steel in the hidden parts to decrease weight, different fabrics or leather). I am also working on design modifications (almost completed) to allow the chair to be dismantled and then easily reassembled, which will reduce the space required for shipping.
