DESIGN NAME: Sequence Rhythm
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Congregation Housing Lobby
INSPIRATION: Originally, at the center of the lobby, there were two large pillars at its front and rear, which caused visual obstructions. Therefore, we boldly came up with the idea of creating a large light decoration resembling the infinite symbol of “∞” with the ceiling that holds the 2 pillars. By connecting floating objects with pillars, it serves not only as lighting and decoration art, but also provides legitimacy for the existence of these pillars.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: This project was the reception lobby of a congregation housing. Marble, solid wood grating and metal components were selected. Abundant linear accents were integrated to create visual rhythmic performance. They introduce light and maintain the visual cleanliness, and pull up visual elevation angles. Also, a large light decoration resembling the infinite symbol of “∞” with the ceiling holds the 2 pillars, providing legitimacy for the existence of these pillars.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Architectural are born out of human needs and the primary purpose of having public spaces is more than creating a texture, a certain grandeur that corresponds to the exterior architecture. Most importantly, they are meant to serve those who use or inhabit the spaces. To present its quality and magnificence, this lobby applies marble, solid wood grating and metal components, which enable the space filled with freely flowing light and shadow, thus presenting humanitarian and fashionable themes.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in November 2017 in Taoyuan,Taiwan and finished in February 2018, and was exhibited in March 2018.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Marbles, wood grating and metals were selected. Abundant linear accents create a sense of visual rhythm, thus presenting its exquisite details and depth of field layers. We surrounded the pillars with thin stone plates according to the variation of their cross-section to create a circular installation, making it the visual spotlight of the lobby. A marble collage was added surrounding grounds while mounting them with corresponding fluid loop patterns to make the design consistent.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Given that this building was located at a hidden lane, natural light was not easy to get through interior space. Therefore, how to introduce light was the first challenge. Second, two bulky columns existed in the center, and became visual obstructions. Thus, cleverly utilizing forms and materials to decorate the columns was another key. Eventually, plenty of wood gratings allow natural light passing through, while a large light decoration resembling the infinite symbol holds the 2 pillars.
CHALLENGE: To fully introduce light and maintain the visual cleanliness, the utilization of abundant wood gratings was the key factor. This enables the space filled with freely flowing light and shadow. Also, two large pillars at its front and rear caused visual obstructions originally. Therefore, we boldly came up with the idea of creating a large light decoration resembling the infinite symbol of “∞” with the ceiling that holds the 2 pillars, making it the visual spotlight of the lobby.
