DESIGN DETAILS
DESIGN NAME:
InterContinental Sofia

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Hotel

INSPIRATION:
The approach for this project is directed with the scope and depth suggesting this emblematic building for Sofia, situated in one of the most important squares of the city, representing recent history of the country. Connecting it with the desire of change, hope, youth and free will.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
The delicate installation communicates an emotional veil above the foyer of the hotel. The wire sculpture and the cascade of lights, spinning along like dandelion petals is a metaphor of harmony and fragility. The sculptural form of the reception poetically contrasts with the combination of materials, reflections, crudeness and tenderness. Interlacement of the graphic theme of brass details and nuances of pink and blue in the stained glass façade introduces a vibrant and poetic aftertaste.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
The design research for the renovation of this emblematic hotel begins by taking in consideration the existing parts of the interior that will remain such as the geometrical marble tiling and the ground floor staircase. Afterwards the process of designing is drawn to creating a delicate sculpture in the reception, a handcrafted marble fireplace and a sitting area, as well as a glass facade facing the street in front. Connecting all the elements of the design the spectator is provoked to see and feel the magical future of freedom interacting the past.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
The project started in October 2018 and is still open to the public in the present day.

FITS BEST INTO CATEGORY:
Interior Space and Exhibition Design

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
The hardest part of the design activity is to source the correct materials and execute the detail. The sound sculpture is made of a stainless steel web and the light bulbs resembling dandelions are made of crystal.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:

CHALLENGE:
The biggest challenge while designing is creating the glass facade windows, that are made by a graphic design artist to change color during the different time of the day. As well as sourcing the whole piece of marble for the reception. Finding the correct material for the light sculpture is part of the design activity in order to be achieved the effortless visual and feel to it.
