UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The project was for the planning and design of a commercial Korean restaurant space. Bamboo is included in the ingredients so the bamboo grove was chosen as the design motif. The same motif was extended to the reception counter and interior design. Bamboo cladding is used extensively throughout the exterior and freshly picked green bamboo decorate the reception.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The floor is concrete with high-gloss finish that complements the exterior windows. The extension of the overall design themes to the second floor with an increase in illumination conveyed a different spatial atmosphere. A more spread-out layout provides a more comfortable setting. The lines of movement and ambiance are leveraged to achieve a balance between style and spatial function.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project finished in Oct. 2012 in Taichung City, Taiwan.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The first floor featured black metal with bands of light to give the space a sense of flow. L-shaped free-standing black mirrors between the hallway and dining areas rise up to the ceiling to frame the spatial axes and dining space. Hidden lighting and cabling along with decorative wall lamps and skylights create spaces with a more private feel. The tables and chairs are movable in order to adapt to changes in the number of users. The warmth of the timber help balance the cool space. A unique aspect of this project was the angled black mirrors on the walls with muted lighting hidden within. Passersby can see the food on the tables reflected in the mirrors.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: The space is 423 square meters

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Wood-wool cement boards made from compressed saw dust with sound insulating qualities were installed on most interior walls for the reuse of waste resources. The design allocated two floors to a space that has a more Japanese flavor as well as other attributes to create a stylish and practical commercial space within the constraints of the budget.
CHALLENGE: Diagonal mirrors at the end of the hallway provide an abstraction of the bamboo grove motif. Hidden beyond them was the spacious central kitchen. At the stairwell leading up to the second floor, the space underneath the stairs was turned into a Japanese round table. The three-dimensional combination formed by the lights, metal fittings and stairs turn the unused space into a decorative feature.
