DESIGN NAME: Gwanghwamun Seafood
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Restaurant
INSPIRATION: There are a lot of old things in the Gwanghwamun area. Walking among the forest of skyscrapers, passing through the plaza where Gyeongbokgung Palace can be seen, you can discover the alleys and spaces of the past that have been preserved in their original state. This building where the restaurant 'Gwanghwamun Seafood' was recently opened also has more than a half century of history. The designers focused on achieving harmony by preserving the time of the 1940s and blending this with modernity.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The designers focused on achieving harmony by preserving the time of the 1940s and blending this with modernity. In order to ascertain the appearance of the building of the past, we first stripped it down before designing. We used the wooden gable structure and the walls used as the interior and exterior structural material found from stripping the building down as design elements for representing the past.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The building is a building, but the exterior facade of the building is designed in two halves to give the illusion of it being a two-story building. In the top half of the divided facade, there are windows of various forms for securing lighting and so that the fish formations inside the space can be seen from the outside, making the place stand out as a seafood restaurant in a fun way.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The location is Jeong-dong, Jung-gu, Seoul and the project starts in July 2018 and ends in November 2018.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: -
CHALLENGE: As the remains from days long past were deeply buried, the structural material of the building was badly aged, and the building almost collapsed during segmental demolition. For the sake of stability, we reinforced with additional structural materials and resumed demolition. During the construction work, we did a lot of reinforcement work due to the condition of the old building, so we had to concern ourselves with many things in order to ensure that we achieved planned design without problems.
