DESIGN DETAILS
DESIGN NAME:
Artemis

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Pencil

INSPIRATION:
Looking through the prism of Architecture, the final goal in designing spaces is to accommodate people and offer them a beautiful, pleasant and comfortable experience of living. Under the same concept, considering that a pencil is accommodating the fingers on it, it is essential that it provides, welcomes and integrates the fingers on its organic body comfortably by allowing a proper 'space' for each finger. The pencil gets its name from Artemis, the Greek Goddess of hunting, for its aerodynamic, organic shape which recalls a spear with which to thrust at prey.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
In a regular pencil, the design focuses on a three-spot finger handling, which results in a big amount of opposing forces on a specific spot on the pencil. This pencil, however, is introducing a pencil handling that creates a three-space concept for the fingers involved. Instead of the holder keeping the pencil, the pencil itself is accommodating your fingers on it, without applying any pressure that eventually influences the arm’s muscular tension.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
The design goal of this pencil is to elevate the writing and sketching performance. By being a proper wooden sculpture, the pencil is 'sitting' in the palm of the user's hand allowing the user to place the fingers on the apposite three spaces of the sculpted item. The user is not holding the pen with a pressure that is exerted by his or her fingers; the pen itself is designed to fit inside the hand. Through the existence of positive and negative surfaces, it guarantees the relaxation of hand muscles as there is no need for the user to keep the pressure in order to hold the pencil.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
This project started in July 2018 in Tehran, Iran and finished in January 2019 in Thessaloniki, Greece.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
This pencil is totally handmade without the use of any machinery and has been sculpted exclusively with different types and sizes of wood chisels. The item has gone under different and multiple sanding and polisihing methods.

SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES:
The pencil has the following dinensions 18 mm x 25 mm x 140 mm.

TAGS:
wooden pencil, sculpted pencil, pencil sculpture, Artemis, woodwork, wooden stationery, wood design

It is truly remarkable to witness a design that eloquently captures beauty, comfort and function all in one. Mohammad Reza Khakpour's "Artemis" pencil is a perfect example of this, with its aerodynamic and organic shape reflecting the Greek Goddess of hunting. The way each finger is accommodated on the pencil's body is evident of the designer's dedication and attention to detail. The design is not only aesthetically pleasing, but also highly functional in its ergonomic shape that provides comfort while in use. It is a pleasure to see such a unique and thoughtful design rewarded with the A' Design Award.
