DESIGN DETAILS
DESIGN NAME:
Olah

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Light

INSPIRATION:
Olah reveals the depths of refinement. Conceived from two of karice’s award winning creations, olah takes aesthetic inspiration from a previously co designed pendant and efficient engineering from the Electron Wall Sconce to bring a new luminaire to life. The new wall sconce marries technological innovation with sleek and sophisticated design. In the spirit of the halo and electron, olah illuminates on a ring without visible fasteners, giving a clean finished aesthetic

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
Olah is a wall sconce using a circline fluorescent bulb, that is integral to the lighting design. Ingenuity and a love of engineering enabled us to create the light without any visible fasteners. The light is unique because of its versatility in hanging options. The light can be mounted in four different ways, using a specifically designed universal bulb holder, and a distinctly designed mounting plate to install the sconce. What you receive is with Olah is four lights in one.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
The light is a wall sconce that is mounted onto a standard octagonal J-box. A unique mounting plate installs onto the J-box, and then the wall plate from the light is secured to the mounting plate using a hidden set screw from the underside of the light.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
The project started in January 2018, as the team wanted to present a brand new light for the February 2018 Buildex Exhibition.

FITS BEST INTO CATEGORY:
Lighting Products and Fixtures Design

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
The process begins with an idea. The first step is to draft the design in Auto Cad. A drawing is created and refined. Programs are written to machine the parts on a computer controlled milling machine. Parts are machined out of billet aluminum, finished, test fitted and sent for anodizing. After parts are finished, the light is assembled, wired, inspected and certified.

SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES:
Depending on how you hang the bulb, or what bulb you choose the dimensions of this light will change. Option 1 - 228.6mm x 276.3mm Option 2 - 203.2mm x 324.5mm

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
Having been in the lighting design business for 18 years, the technological know how has enabled us to create new lighting designs. Using two past light fixtures, the idea was conceived to used the technology from both fixtures to create one new one.

CHALLENGE:
A creatiive solution was developed to eliminate all fasteners. No where on the light will you see any visible fasteners, except on the bottom of the wall mounting plate. The wall mounting plate is attached to the J-box using a uniquely designed mounting bracket
