DESIGN NAME:
Chem Tokens

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Educational Tool

INSPIRATION:
The main inspiration was to try to help pupils in school after having the worst experience in chemistry class myself. In high school I started criticizing the school environment and started thinking about how it could be changed. I was constantly bothered by the fact that nothing has changed in this field for quite some time. It is hard to imagine how the world of atoms relates to symbols, how equations written in the textbook are equal to chemical reactions in the real world.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
Chem Tokens is an innovative teaching tool that combines the augmented reality with physical experience during chemistry lessons. Tokens design is based on the basic principles of the periodic table. When analyzing them, it is easy to figure out the structure of the table, the uniqueness of each element and physically connect and create molecules. It is all visualized with special app so you can see how do elements look like.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
Students are presented with the tokens on a whiteboard for teacher to show how atoms forms into molecules. Or Students are presented with smaller tokens to connect on their own on a table. Also using the app, they are asked to accomplish specific chemical reaction tasks, connect atoms, see visualizations and complete virtual experiments.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
The project started in January 2018 in Vilnius Academy of Art, and finished in May 2019 in Vilnius Academy of Art, Vilnius, Lithuania. It was exhibited: in gallery Titanikas, in Vilnius May-July 2018, in Tokyo DesignArt week, Tokyo, Japan in October 2018, in Dubai design week, Global Grad Show, Dubai, United Arab Emirates in November 2018.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
UV print on white Plexiglas and later laser cut. Magnets on the back.

SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES:
Collection consists of 48 different tokens. Tokens size, form and colour is based on the principles of the periodic table. Each token has different size measurements. Collection can be made in two sizes. In teacher collection the biggest token 111 x 120 x 5 mm, the smallest token 43 x 51 x 5 mm. In students collection the biggest token 65 x 70 x 5 mm, the smallest token 25 x 30 x 5 mm.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
The most interesting part of this project was testing Chem Tokens with pupils and teachers. From the very first glance I saw the pupils' eyes brighten. They immediately wanted to grab the tokens and inspect them all under an iPad. I was very surprised by their positive reaction to my virtual lessons, I thought that this generation of children had already seen everything. Perhaps they were most impressed with the fact that this is a game which could be used instead of their textbooks.

CHALLENGE:
The creation of the app was the biggest challenge. The main problem with the project was to create a simple and intuitive learning system design, which originally sounded very simple, but later caused the most headaches.

NAME:
Vilnius Academy of Arts

PROFILE:
Vilnius Academy of Arts is the largest and oldest art university in the Baltic States, established in 1793 as an Architecture department at the Chief school of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania in Vilnius. Since 1990, almost 100 alumni of the Academy were awarded National Art Awards. Today Academy has over 1,800 students in four cities – Vilnius, Kaunas, Telšiai and Klaipėda. Each faculty has its own unique study programmes, which offer Lithuanian students a possibility to find a specific art specialisation in different cities. Vilnius faculty has a wide collection of most popular art study programmes varying from Painting to Culture Management and Culture Politics. The VAA study programmes essentially meet the needs of the national cultural, social and economic development, since graduates of the school are employed in different areas of cultural, social and economic development, public administration and educational institutions. Having regard to the needs of cultural and social development, as well as the national economy, and considering the number of students entering into different study programmes the appropriateness of admission of students into different study programmes is discussed in the Senate every year. The key areas of activity of the Strategy of the VAA are studies, creation and research, improvement of management, structure and infrastructure and financial soundness. These defined strategic areas of activity incorporate all the principal fields of a higher educational institution. The targets set forth and the tasks prescribed in the Strategy are interrelated and correspond to the main strategic goal as defined in the Strategy – improve the quality of preparing specialists of the highest qualification in arts, design and art research meeting the present and future needs of Lithuania, support the progress in the area of art and design, ensure the national and cultural identity of the State, educate artists and designers able to compete in the Lithuanian and European art market, and enhance competitiveness of the national economy due to achievements in Lithuanian design.
