DESIGN NAME: Sizing
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Augmented Reality Measure
INSPIRATION: Express interest raised from key resellers and customers. Most of them are selling or buying various kinds of safety products and kids wear. Use rulers to measure each length and write down&record them is not a fast way for selling process, especially for keeping customers.
The inspiration also cames from online shopping for myself and my daughter. We often did not know if the size would fit. Even with free returns it was both a hassle to return and a delay in receiving the correctly fitting.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: AI recognize hand or foot then ARkit measures 3D data, algorithm providing insights to a better measurement experience which cannot be reached by a simple ruler. This product makes online shoes, boots, and gloves shopping efficiently by automatically suggesting correct sizes. Three unique features: (1) Design for safety products and kids wear which are different from adults daily wearing; (2) Data statistics and records for sourcing and parents; (3) Unit conversion which is convenient for purchasing from overseas; (4)Palm and foot circumference measurement.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: When the app is launched, it examines the image in the camera to determine if there is a man/woman/child';s hand or foot in its view. If a hand is detected, it automatically measures the width, length, palm circumference, and other parameters. If a foot is detected it needs to take two photos to measures the width, length and the height of the instep. With a single button tap, the app recommends the correctly fitting gloves or shoes with global units conversion. The users can record the information for statistics.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in July 2017 in Shanghai and the first version was released in February 2018. We are planning a second version integrated into another platform for future release.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Except using the user-centered design process, in this project, we specifically creatively applied techniques from:
(1)UE workshop and full-link design;
(2)Rapid Prototyping;
(3)User experience evaluation;
(4)Agile Software design and development;
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: User-centered design following UX design principles

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: We did VOC(Voice of Customer) and analyze the Critical to Quality with our reseller and end user. One question we asked both of these groups is why they did not want to use the other tools . We used the feedback from these groups to provide users with an app that met their needs.
CHALLENGE: The creative challenge was convincing shoppers to trust our app's recommendation. Showing the parameters of the hand or foot which is very close to their sizes used to be increased the user's confidence and let them select apparel in the correct size.The technical challenge was in image recognition and measurement. We use Augmented Reality without image contrast. This approach is user-friendly, but takes lots of training for AI-based measurement.
