DESIGN NAME: Rockaby
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Portable Cot
INSPIRATION: I wanted to design and build a simple cot for my newborn daughter. It needed to be easily dismantlable to help with storage and mobility, allowing me to use it in various locations inside and out.I noticed how quickly she fell asleep when I rocked her in my arms and I developed the idea of using a cot suspended between two folding arms to facilitate this.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: A portable folding cot for infants up to 7 months. The frame is made from two parallel lengths of wood joined with dowels, with a pivoting arm at each end.A hammock type cot is hung from the ends of the arms. The child is enveloped safely and comfortably and can be gently rocked. The frame is kept stable and locked open by two spars, with offset mounted feet, that slide through holes in the frame. There are no metal parts. It is simple to use, light, elegant and practical.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The first reaction of a potential user of the Rockaby is one of happiness at the ease of use of the product. The safety aspect of the hammock is also immediately apparent and its mobility and size is well appreciated for its practicality in todays home environment.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in late 2014,being registered with the intellectual property office on the 4th December 2014.It was designed in London and Mallorca

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: After many prototypes made from pine and various available hammock material I settled on glued Beech or Oak as the most appropriate material for the fame because of the strength/weight ratio and appealing look, and a cotton canvas material for the hammock for its tenacity, comfort value and wash ability. For ease of use in assembly I designed a simple toggle mechanism to attach the cot to the frame. This can be adjusted for length to cope with stretch of fabric and cord, over time.
The feet are attached off-centre to the spars so that they can be turned to cope with uneven surfaces.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Frame closed:L135,H6,W6cm
Frame open and stabilised:L135,H40,W52cm
Hammock:W36,L75cm
Frame and stabilising rods:Beech or Oak.
Hammock and bag material:Cotton canvas with nylon cord and wooden toggles.
WHO infant charts weight of child at 6 months:6.7kg,length:64cm.The Rockaby easily copes with both these parameters.
My aim was to make a cot suitable for infants up to 7 months. After this age the design would not be safe because of the childs movements during sleep.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: My research was based on my own need for a specific piece of furniture that I could not find in the market place. My objectives were to see if there were any products that could fulfill this need.I searched the internet, contacted various manufacturers and presented them a prototype to gauge their reaction and garner advice.
CHALLENGE: The first obstacle in creating the Rockaby was the issue of stability when the hammock was rocked.I used several different diameters of spar, noticing their flexibility when under stress, before settling on the final size. The pivot point of the frame arms were also an important consideration due to the load put upon them.Simplicity of design coupled with the correct choice of material was the key to a successful project.
