| DESIGN NAME: Strong PRIMARY FUNCTION: Wall Mounted Range Hood INSPIRATION: The core idea of Strong is to create a seamless surface and make the technology invisible, by integrating it into the kitchen style. The use of tactile high-quality material as a front panel, such as Porcelain slab or Corian, which used as countertops in the kitchens, provides an opportunity to integrate the range hood into the kitchen style. The core idea implemented in every detail of the product from seamless one-piece surface to the control functions. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Strong is a wall-mounted range hood with high performance and high-quality custom front panels. The use of high-quality material as a front panel, such as Porcelain slab or Corian provides an opportunity to integrate the range hood into the kitchen style. Invisible touch sensor technology provides perfect control experience to the end-users. The new generation BLDC motor technology offers A+ Energy class and 700 m3/h flow rate. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The end-user can control the wall-mounted range hood with the touch control buttons, located on the seamless surface of the front panel. It is intended to provide a Wow-effect by controlling the product only touching the graphics on the surface. Additionally material selection of this design provides the simplified cleaning operation, due to the specifications of the materials. The new generation BLDC motor technology offers A+ Energy class and 700 m3/h flow rate. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in May 2018 in Istanbul and finished in December 2018 in Merzifon, and exhibited at IFA in Berlin in September 2018 and at IMMCologne in Cologne in January 2019. PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: As a front panel two materials are used; the porcelain slab, on which dirt does not accumulate and can be cleaned with water and known cleaning agents and similarly, Corian, which has a non-porous surface that prevents dirt and stains from penetrating the material. The use of the various and tangible textures of the porcelain slab or the smooth surface of the Corian materials offers a unique sensation, natural feel to the end user. The touch control behind this layer is a result of meticulous research and development activities. Material analysis especially focused on kitchen sector and construction industry is the basis of the whole research phase, leading by industrial design team. It includes trend and material analysis of the sectors, collaborations with material suppliers, sample collection for the meticulous research and development activities and following quality tests. During this process durability of the material, safety, ease of use are the main concerns of R&D department. CHALLENGE: The research phase of this design project requires a collaborative work by different agents, and designer is in the middle of whole the process for continuing data transfer. After the decisions within the initial material research, the challenge is creating business collaborations with material suppliers and sample collection for research and development activities and quality tests. During this process durability of the material, safety, ease of use are the main concerns of R&D department. Another challenge for R&D activities are controlling without losing any part from the seamless surface of the material, to fulfil the design requirements.
