DESIGN NAME: Ghalti Atkan
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Interactive Installation
INSPIRATION: I started with a recurring thought in all my works of art that i find beauty in pain. It was a belief that underpinned all my projects. So i decided to explore it. i wrote about, interviewed relatives, revisited all the places that had a deep affect on me since childhood, to find my answers. For example, i revisited the hospitals my siblings (who had passed away) were born in.
After exploring all these aspects i understood what situations had affected me the most and then chose to work on them.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: My project called "Ghalti Atkan" was an interactive installation (with sound). This project was based on my childhood experience of studying in an abusive school, while at home two of my younger siblings passed away due to illnesses.
The project was aimed at making the audience feel what i felt within that space and also to make the audience see that beauty can always be found in pain and there is of course, a great achievement in overcoming it.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The interaction happens when the audience walks in within the space and experiences it. Tactility was a very important aspect for me and i felt the audience that did not want to touch the walls, it was their way of interaction. As the sounds and the concept are very much relatable in my country, different people identified with the triggers differently.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in September 2017 in Lahore at Beaonhouse National University and ended in April 2018.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: I used sheep felt and threads to turn fibre into ropes in order to imitate veins. All my work was hand done on organza fabric and the installation was put up 5 inches away from the walls so that the shadows of the fabric on top of the organza would add to the impact. Spot lights were also installed to make the shadows look stronger. A sound piece was also incorporated via hidden speakers, that mimicked the humming sound we here (of children) when we enter a school. in the middle of these sounds, hitting sounds of cane could be heard. This sound, overall created an experience without which the artwork would be incomplete.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: The installation was spread over three walls, ( 9*11', 9*16') and 9*16' (in feet)

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: I was inspired by Marina Abramovic, Frida Kahlo and Francis Bacon. Hence, I interviewed my relatives and friends and asked them to write accounts on my prominent characteristics, i revisited and documented my old school and the hospitals where we would go to, to treat my ill siblings. Then I color coded the similarities between the writings. For example, people remembered my hands, and associated distinct colours with me. These factors helped me in my experimentation and enabled me to find my own imagery.
CHALLENGE: The hardest part was finding my own imagery because this process was not just strategically difficult but emotionally daunting. I experimented with every medium that had a relationship with my narrative, burnt paper, thread, writing, old photographs and textures. My final elements were: Burnt paper (derived from abusive experiences), the skin texture (derived from the texture of my brother's hands) and lastly, the Text; Ghalti Atkan. Both words refer to mistakes we make and the ones we correct in Urdu language.
