DESIGN NAME: Sparing
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Functional Paint Bucket
INSPIRATION: For better results in conventional wall painting works, a paint tray is used. After each painting work, the paint trays must be washed. This situation causes paint wasting, time wasting, water wasting and water pollution. Discarded paints harm the environment. These subjects have been base source of inspiration for the Sparing design.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Sparing is a paint bucket with improved functional properties. The lid of the paint bucket can also be used as a paint tray. This means that there is no need to clean the paint tray again after painting. Thus, there is no waste of time, paint and water. The box can easily open and close the lid so that the paint box can be used repeatedly. Sparing provides easy and controlled pouring operation thanks to its well-positioned handle, well-oriented gate and cavity under box.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Sparing is designed to be user oriented. The lid can be opened easily with its wide grip on the lid. The product can be used as a paint tray when the lid is removed and turn over. Paint can be poured easily thanks to the position of the handle, the pouring mouth and the space under the bucket. After the paint roller is dipped in the paint tray, the paint is rubbed on the surface of the tray to remove excess paint. When the painting is finished, the lid is closed again, and the paint is not wasted.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project is designed and prototyped in Konya/TURKEY in 2019. Registration of design in Turkey is a still ongoing process.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Sparing can be produced with conventional paint bucket production methods and does not need a new technology. It can be produced by plastic injection method. All the design details have been carefully prepared so that the product can be easily removed from the mold. The product, which is planned to be produced from plastic polypropylene material, can be colored if necessary. The Sparing will be produced from 3 separate parts as bucket, top lid and handle.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: The size of the product is 321 x 370 x 398 mm when closed and full. When the second box is placed on the first box, the total height increases by 360 mm. The rectangular structure of the product makes the product more durable. It also provides storage efficiency. Standard medium paint rolls can be used with the product. The paint bucket can be nested when empty, thus providing storage and transportation advantages. Thanks to the stopper beneath, the handle remains in the horizontal position.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The painting action is a stuck job. First, studies on painting work and observations were made. After these studies, the amounts of dyes which were wasted in the paint trays were measured. As a result, large amounts of paints were found to be wasted. Expanded market and product surveys and researches were conducted upon this determination. The predictions obtained from this information are used in the design decisions of the product.
CHALLENGE: The main purpose of the project is to solve all problems in the painting works at the same time to create a user-oriented experience on painting works. This was the most challenging part of the project. The ability to solve the both problems of ergonomic usage and problems of easy producibility is another feature that distinguishes this project from its competitors. Although it has been developed functionally, it can easily be produced in conventional production system.
