| DESIGN NAME: The Game PRIMARY FUNCTION: Tourist Center INSPIRATION: Design Concept: “Bamboo” represents several meanings: 1. The story of “Zhu De’s carrying pole”(made of moso bamboo) in 1928 during the period of “carrying for food” is a well-known story. 2. Jingang bamboo is an important local forestry resource, and it is often used as material for building houses and daily products. 3. Bamboo culture stresses on the spirit of humbleness and determination, has a strong influence on the aesthetics in the Orient. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: This case is located at Jinggang Mountains which is the revolutionary base of Communist Party of China. There are a great deal of visitors and CPC members gather for training in this area every year. Different from common souvenir shops of most tourist sites, our client hope to incorporate the functions of exhibitions, tourist information, cultural and creative products sell, catering, DIY experience, and training courses to create a new business model. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: As the expansion of Chinese cities and the rapid development of the economy, traditional craftsmanship and construction methods have gradually disappeared. Due to the fact that the case is located on the mountain, the local residents still maintain the habit of making living utensils and furniture with bamboo, and maintain the traditional craftsmanship and construction methods. Through the redesign and extensive use of bamboo, it is hoped that visitors will have more knowledge and experience of bamboo while visiting, so that this traditional material has more opportunities to be used. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project designed in Taipei and constructed in March to October 2017 at Jinggang Mountains in China. |
PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The Bracket Complexes is one of the traditional structures of the oriental architecture, and most of them use wood. Because the area is rich in bamboo, we replaced the wood with bamboo. Bamboo is also the most representative green building material in recent years, we spent a lot of time visiting the local masters, from cutting bamboo, picking bamboo, boiling bamboo and weaving bamboo, using bamboo poles to join the bamboo, and tried several 1:1 mockups on the site to successfully find the way to construct it. Therefore, in the process of construction, it is often encountered that there is no construction according to the drawings. However, by long-term face-to-face communication, each step is transformed into a process that can be used in accordance with the local habits, and finally replaced by a paper design in a 1:1 mockup model.
