DESIGN NAME: Yu Zuo
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Hotel
INSPIRATION: Yu Zuo Hotel is located within the walls of the Daimiao Temple in Tai'an City, China. The temple was built more than 2000 years ago, and it was the temple where most of the Chinese emperors would worship the God of Mount Tai before they climb Mount Tai. Therefore this hotel is named after Emperor Qianlong's dormitory Yu Zuo in the temple. Originally built in 1952, our goal was to transform the design of rooms and restaurants to provide guests with a quiet, comfortable, and historic accommodation.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Historic, royal culture is the key to this design. Most of the inspiration came from the temple, which was built during the Han Dynasty. The design of the guest room furnitures is inspired by furnitures of the Han Dynasty. The paintings are images from the murals in the hall of the temple, and the furniture textiles are from the patterns on Qing Dynasty emperors' robes. The marble patterns on the bathroom walls resembles the ink paintings of mountains.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The hotel rooms consist of 5 large villas, each with a small foyer, which we designed as a waiting area without a concierge desk, and the concierge staff were moved into a hidden service room, which is placed next to the foyer. The restaurant is located on the ground floor of a separate small building. The buffet table in the restaurant was designed to be mobile and can be reorganized easily, and the size of dining tables vary to suit the buffet and banquet needs.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project began its design in Nov 2015 and the design was completed in Jul 2016. The construction was completed in Jan 2018. Address: 50 Daimiao North Road, Tai'an City, China

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The building was built with a brick-concrete structure, thus the space within could not be structurally modified. Due to the restriction, we simply changed the existing windows of the guest room to bay windows, and the restaurant was changed to a floor-to-ceiling window to enhance the connection between the interior and exterior. By using the oriental design language, a contemporary life scene was created with a sense of place. The main materials used are: oak wood, carpets, marble, mirrors.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: The total renovated area is 3100 sq.m.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: We hoped that the hotel guests can experience the unique history and culture of this city. Thus before the design began, we carefully examined the history, architecture, murals, and calligraphy stone carvings from Mount Tai and the Dai Temple. We have extracted some design elements, for example the paintings on the wall came from the murals in the temple, as well as the calligraphy stone carvings on Mount Tai and in the temple; the furniture textiles are from the patterns on emperors' robes.
CHALLENGE: The dated structure and layout of this building is a challenge for us. Due to the limited budget of the owner, therefore we were not able to change the building structure on a large scale. We then shifted our focus towards designing the temperament of the interior. By using simple materials, light tones, soft lighting, and carefully selected artwork, the space displays a sense of both history and contemporary.
