DESIGN NAME: Simple Living
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Residence
INSPIRATION: As the architectural form is of a square volume with a central void, around which the inhabiting 200-plus residences are located, therefore, the landscaped garden is centered on a beech tree as the centerpiece, symbolizing the notion of Home. The design for the lobby interior originated from the icon of the 20th Century Expressionist, Kandinsky, and utilizing geometric elements such as point, line, and surface to create a modernist minimal and rhythmic visual impression.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: This project has leaped away from the conventional design for the public space of residential buildings in Taiwan, and from an architectural perspective, it abandoned complex material usage and accumulated decorations, instead, it adopted simplified design vocabulary and deliberate blank arrangements in offering a brand new discourse for the planning of public spaces, as the procession upon walking into courtyard garden and then into the internal lobby, it visually creates a semantic pause.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: As there are primary and secondary entrances on the ground floor, whether it be the design of the lobby entrance, or other public amenity areas, the common theme was anchored on the synergy with the natural environment in the courtyard, through sensible spatial layout and material utilization so that anyone in the any part of the interior would have visual access to the courtyard vista, while bringing in natural lighting and good ventilation.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project was completed in March 2017 in New Taipei City, Taiwan.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Starting from the external courtyard garden, through establishing the visual focus of a centerpiece tree, one can be subject to a flowing sense of comfort emanating from the space; a dynamic sense of visual layers from perimeter greenery strips and multi-layer plantation with pebble design. With a pure white-color theme for the interior, beige color-series and teak materials convey a warm, serene and Zen-like residential ambiance.
CHALLENGE: As the design team observed the trend of having superfluous elements such as many amenity, garden landscape, art objects and decorative items, etc., so as to overwhelm the sensory experience of the beholders but simply backfired in creating chaotic visual experiences instead. Nevertheless, considering the growing needs of modern dwellers encountering home environments that bring relief to the everyday stress, it has indeed been a major challenge in conceptualizing a disciplined and quality spatial solution to meet the needs of the residents.
