DESIGN NAME: Humble Harmony Origin
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Educational Campus
INSPIRATION: The starting point was site selection. Urban planning and environmental assessment considerations meant the site was in a commercial district.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The project involved the development of a master plan for the entire educational campus including the buildings and internal spaces.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The challenge then was to create a distinction between the school spaces and the commercial model while integrating the spatial planning of the two.The design of the building drew on the spirit of the Confucian scholars by organizing the school and commercial/office areas along the "Tai Chi" model.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project finished in Sep. 2018 in Hsinchu City, Taiwan.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Inside the white building complexes, Oriental lattices were used to create a white and lively space within the concrete jungle. The rooftop space was also used for sporting venues such as the swimming pool and archery range. Bamboo and trees were planted outside to create a simple yet elegant green belt. A space like this becomes a unique part of the urban landscape.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: The space is 4272 square meters

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The design made use of indentations or elevated spaces to create a multitude of galleries that connected every space. Integration of learning activities from the daycare center up to the junior high school meant children of all age groups can learn and play together in the same space. The widths of the galleries were also expanded to four meters to turn them into classrooms in their own right. The shift away from clearly defined learning areas established a modern Oriental-style campus where Eastern architecture is used in a Western manner.
CHALLENGE: The three key elements in the design were Oriental elements, eco-campus and natural essence. The design of the campus aimed for greater connection with the local community compared to other educational venues. Large tracts of open space were set aside for landscaping and plantings that transformed the campus into a village of farming scholars.
