| DESIGN NAME: Swim PRIMARY FUNCTION: Digital Print Scarf INSPIRATION: The artist is very into Chinese paper cut, which is a two dimensional, abstract art.And fish is a typical auspicious pattern in China, it means good luck, prosperity, happiness. Meanwhile the artist was also deeply impressed by the realism and surrealism from Western art. Therefore she combines these two artistic expressions together, changing the paper cut into multi layers, and draw the fish in an exquisite, realistic and delicate way, aiming to create a fantasy and mysterious effect UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: This is an attempt by the artist to try to collide with Eastern and Western cultures. Fish and paper-cutting in Chinese traditional culture are abstract, two-dimensional patterns, while the style she also like from Western arts are three-dimensional, exquisite, and realistic. These two different expression creates a scene in the artist’s dream: a few delicate red fish swim in the ocean of multi-layer paper-cuts. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Made of 100% traditional Chinese silk, this scarf is soft to touch and has a good gloss. The way the body interact with the scarf is flexible, it can be folded into many forms. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: This scarf is the artist's latest design work. The artist begins by observing and screening the shape of each paper-cut pattern, ends by finishing the scarf’s photography, for a total of 9 months, from June 2018 to February 2019. In China. |
PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: During the design process, the artist used the hand-drawn sketches first, then used Adobe Illustrator to make fine lines and colors, and finally used Adobe Photoshop to adjust. In the production process, first color matching, then print sample, and then printed with digital printing to try the best to show the pattern’s delicate colors and shadows. The material is traditional Chinese silk, 16 momme, technics to deal with are include ageing, washing, color fixing, desizing,finishing, hand hemming. In-depth observation of the pattern of each paper-cut and their background story, in-depth observation of different kinds of fish tails and swimming postures, in-depth observation of the relationship between light and shadow in Western painting, and then creatively combine these factors together. CHALLENGE: In the process of design, the challenge is how to arrange many elements in an orderly and creative way in the picture. In the process of production, the problem that needs to be solved is what kind of printing technology is selected to ensure to maintain delicate details in the pattern as much as possible.
