DESIGN NAME: ParkUp
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Placemaking Service
INSPIRATION: Taipei City left too many vacant lots but too little open spaces. As a placemaking brand, ParkUp focuses on renovating those neglected leftover spaces into creative urban open spaces. By conducting a series of spatial experiments, ParkUp not only remodels visible sites but reconnects invisible broken relationships between communities and neighborhoods. Little by little, making a better city we can all share.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: ParkUp remodels idle spaces with 3 principles:
1.Under 165 sqm-To plan only for small idle spaces.
2.Inclusive Design-To ensure accessibility for all.
3.Localization-To discover the real needs of space users.
We also devised ParkUp Tools to facilitate placemaking. It consists of wood columns and a series of metal products that can be intuitively assembled. The modular assembling system makes it easy to maintain, which allows for replacing any single damaged unit without retiring the whole set.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: ParkUp GT: a fitness-oriented community space with 9 white steel frames to suit any outdoor event since they can act as hangers, poles or frames.
ParkUp DT: a children’s playground where kids could run through or climb up wood columns, hide inside or weave through the climbing frame and jump down or wrap themselves in the drip net.
ParkUp SYC: a multifunctional pavilion with the movable wood platforms adapting to various design events: market, exhibition, performance, etc.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: ParkUp GT: located in Guting District, Taipei City; From Sept. 2016 to Mar. 2017.
ParkUp DT: located in Datong District, Taipei City; From Jul. 2017 to Jan. 2018; In partnership with Taipei City Government.
ParkUp SYC: located in Xinyi District, Taipei City; From Mar. 2018 to Dec. 2018; In partnership with Taiwan Design Center.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: (1)Modular Design: integrated flexibly, rearranged adaptably and repaired easily. (2)Customization: following same design principles but developing respective functions and features that fit into local contexts and satisfy the actual needs of space users. (3)Prefabricated Components: assembled efficiently and accurately. (4)Sustainable Materials: using FSC-certificated domestic-grown timber (Taiwania cryptomerioides), metal and Accoya wood to adapt to the warm and humid weather in Taiwan.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: ParkUp series include 3 completed projects: ParkUp GT, ParkUp DT and ParkUp SYC.
ParkUp GT: site area 100 sqm; with nine sets of white steel frames elevating from 180cm, 200cm to 220cm.
ParkUp DT: site area 130 sqm; total height 300cm; with pre-drilled holes at 3 different height (60cm, 120cm, 180cm) in response to different play behavior.
ParkUp SYC: site area 156 sqm; total height 300cm; with pre-drilled holes at 3 different height (40cm, 80cm, 120cm) to fit various recreational needs.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Before design: research, data collecting and analysis, problem targeting and solution proposing.
During design and construction: site analysis, preliminary planning, detailed design, simplification, prototyping, correction, fabrication and construction.
After completion: maintenance, behavior observation and improvement.
Feedbacks collected after the completion will be inputs for the new placemaking cycle.
CHALLENGE: The hardest part of each project is to precisely target the actual needs of space users. Otherwise the site will fall into disuse again. To prevent this situation, we would conduct a series of field investigation, interviews and even hold participatory design workshops.
