DESIGN NAME: En Plein Ciel 2
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Private Apartment
INSPIRATION: Doing nothing, but not doing nothing. A space of doing nothing, with formlessness and uselessness. Formless form can be authentic form, and useless use can have authentic use. This is a concept to overturn common sense that good design and space have to make a good form and to suggest a certain use. It is based not on the form of wall but on the emptiness between walls. I wanted to redefine the concrete residential space disconnected with nature caused by the limitation of ready-made house divided into each room. This project is the escape from a plan which was uniformed by the logic of real estate development.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: This project is a private pent-house apartment in the rich area of south Seoul, Korea. En plein ciel, it means 'in the fully sky' in French. This Project aimed at making it maintain the view as a house with minimum wall and maximum landscape. It is suggested 'emptying' to make residents enjoy the view perfectly. A scene filled with the sky, the light, the clouds, the mountains and the earth is spread at an altitude of 200 meters. In this house, the space and the nature are united as one.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The space of doing nothing-aesthetics of emptying is not simply completed by no walls or minimizing decorations. It can be completed by creating the formless interior space with moderate finishing materials and simple details, and the useless state to accept all functions with appropriate furniture. This house has the maximum openness towards the natural landscape-the sky, the light flowing in the ultimately moderate interior space, and the vague boundary with no walls which separate an artificial space from the nature, an interior space from the sky.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in October 2016 and finished in February 2018. It is located in Seoul, Korea.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: This project aimed at making the view with minimum structure and maximum landscape. It is suggested 'emptying' in order to make residents enjoy the view perfectly. Firstly, the finishing materials were simplified. It is intended to make the space look simple and neat by using the several materials maximized the excellent matter properties, and attempted the harmony between materials.
Secondly, the biggest change for securing the view was to use glass as a finishing material for walls dividing each room. Glass was substituted for walls between the rooms. In result, a space opened completely toward the sky was created.
CHALLENGE: Even if this space was merely simplified and emptied, this project didn’t need less efforts. The large tiles were more difficult to treat them. And the earthquake resistant design cracked the tiles according its wind movement. The glass walls emphasize their details in order to conceal hardwares. In this way, a space spread in the sky is born in accordance with the designer’s intention.
