| DESIGN NAME: Coral Heart PRIMARY FUNCTION: Installation Art INSPIRATION: As the weather is warming up, the temperature rising of the sea and acidification bring severe theat of survival for coral, and even lead to its death or albino. The corals live in hard situation in the world now. We build a coral heart which belongs to Taiwan specially on 2019 Taiwan Lantern Festival, hoping to express that people get along with nature in harmony. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The coral is like an umbilical cord which breeds innumerable marine life. We combine the concepts of architecture, lighting and performance art. The concept of marine conservation with material characteristics is awakened by the Coral Heart exhibition. The originally bleached coral gradually becomes active with the nighttime light-dimming and temperature changes, demonstrating the benign interaction between people and the ocean! We anticipate the coral’s gradual recovery, re-growth and symbiosis. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: We set up interactive buttons, and when visitors touch and start, the lights turn dim and gray instantly, representing the bleaching effect of corals through human destruction and environmental changes, and then, over time, the lights will slowly recover and start the lighting program, entering the stage of color transformation, representing the rebirth of the coral. Every day the device will continue to circulate in destruction and rebirth, conveying the precious place of life. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The exhibition started in February 2019, will be a permanent exhibition in Dapeng Bay National Scenic Area, Donggang Town, Pingtung City, Taiwan. PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Laser cutting, precision lathe cutting, 3d precision simulation drawings. The materials are metal and Polypropylene. TAGS: Marine conservation, Architecture Art, Lighting Art, Performance Art, Lighting and shadow Art, Taiwan Lantern Festival, Taiwan Travel RESEARCH ABSTRACT: We have studied the destruction and rebirth of corals from human and environmental influences, and we use the art of architecture and lighting to combine the art of behavior to make this device, where people travel and interact within the region, every step of the way affects the life of the Coral heart, as well as the people around them, by analogy to the moment when the ocean is devastated, everyone has a responsibility, and destruction and rebirth are between the thoughts. CHALLENGE: I. We envisage the creation of a terrestrial coral to represent the heart position of the entire light Festival pavilion, the ground conditions of the site for the coastal sandy land, how to securely install the device and the challenge of pushing a large number of crowds in the face of the event, rapid assembly and disassembly is also a link we care about, We eventually complete the assembly and structural testing within a very short period of time limited by the organizer. II. Metal skeleton and polypropylene sheet are produced in two regions respectively, due to time factors, we are unable to carry out calibration operations between each other, completely according to the precise 3D model drawing and simulation, to achieve a precise agreement between each other. III. The lighting design how to express the gorgeous color of corals in the sea and the interaction with the ocean, how to show the process of coral bleaching and gradual recovery, we use precise light and shadow design techniques, to show the complete expression of the destruction and rebirth of the Coral Heart to all visitors, but also to convey the important issue of marine conservation.
