DESIGN NAME: Grand Hyatt Dalian
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Specialty Restaurant
INSPIRATION: A specialty restaurant spanning 3 floors. The space was divided into 3 key areas with their own identity - eating, drinking, entertaining - while maintaining continuity throughout the overall space. Ocean, the eating space provides a stunning ocean view during the day. At night, a show kitchen installation is the key feature and focal point. The entertaining floor is more intimate and luxurious, utilizing expensive furniture and bespoke lighting, with a bubble wall feature installation.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: We saw the entire space as a grand apartment abode for different families. The window screen elements link all functions together while maintaining individuality. Guests upstairs look down through the screens as if looking out to the street from a building. Looking up from the lower floor is like looking into someone's apartment. Moreover, sunlight creates unique screen shadows on the wall through a glass curtain. At night, the lighting expresses an ambiance change, showcasing the patterns.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: When guests enter the restaurant, they will first see the architectural form staircase with a floating lighting fixture, like jelly fishes in the blue ocean. The original two levels of restaurant space are open and filled with voices of merriment. An additional third floor is the final destination, providing greater luxury and privacy. The window screen frames throughout the space interact with sunlight and lighting to create shadows and lines that enrich the expression of light.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The design process began in 2015 and ran through to 2016. Construction on the hotel started in 2016. The Grand Hyatt Dalian officially opened in February 2017.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Embracing the high space, against the windows is a 3-story atrium. Using a Chinese window concept, a traditional screen pattern is elevated beyond tradition and into modernity, made into ultra-thin reduced weight aluminum sheets and combined into boxes around the space. This signature Chinese architectural element and the enjoyment of sitting window-side, observing people, buildings and surroundings, seeing into others’ windows and observing interactions, provides an interesting experience.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: The window screen material juxtaposes with traditional Chinese courtyard windows, using laser-cut light, washed aluminum composed of multiple sizes, lengths and widths. The increase of depth and extrusion of the patterned screens result in a 3D casing that enhances overall visual complexity. These flat frames are placed throughout the three floors as screens, facades or ceiling fixtures. Their reflective quality is capable of displaying a series of unpredictable expressions from dawn till dusk.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: We researched a historic legacy of window patterns, looking through hundreds to find the right fit. The window screen pattern needed to express traditional Chinese culture while cleverly displaying it in a modern way.
CHALLENGE: Dalian has a very cold winter and we needed to create a destination to attract guests throughout the year. The space is very high and we chose to embrace this height as a whole, while needing to maintain the individuality of the dining, drinking and entertaining spaces, creating a strong identity for each. Lighting plays a critical part as well, emphasizing a unique character for each space. The biggest challenge was to realize these goals with local craftsmanship and under a reasonable budget.
