DESIGN NAME: Leshan Sales Center
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Housing Sales Center
INSPIRATION: With the central idea of “Planting a tree that will grow into a forest on the mountain,” and it also fits the intention of the client, who cares about every inch of the environment in the high-rises it builds.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: With the central idea of “Planting a tree that will grow into a forest on the mountain,” the designers adopt the contour of the mountain cohabited with the plants. When the trees grow into a forest, the ecological mimicry of the designed nature threads together the indoor and outdoor spaces. The void and the solid co-exist with the layering of the herbs and bushes. The old structure is thus transfigured into an organic space of lush vitality.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The designers readapt the warehouse of an old sugar factory into a sales center of a housing project. The five-year limit of the lease prescribes that the building be return as it was. Therefore we consider the approach of wrapping that will not damage the original structure while integrating the inside and outside of the spaces.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started October in 2018 in Pingtung City, Taiwan and finished in November 2018. This show room is still on site now.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The designers prepare six modularized wooden panels. Each is 2cm by 18cm in thickness and width, while the length varies between 90cm and 240cm. The trees are made one by one. Firstly, square posts are erected on the ground as foundations. Each curved panel is then fixed to the main structure. The extended panels are elongated through glues and suspension cables as if the plastic quality of each streamlined bough is painted stroke by stroke.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: An area of space is 140 square meter.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The wooden panels mimicking the tree boughs are bent to convey the softness of silk. On the one hand, it is closer to the dynamic growth of the tree, on the other hand, the provoked emotion and imaginary forms compensate the loss of haptic quality due to the abundant textures of the surrounding materials. The streamlined fluidity of the lines breezes through the slow life of living in a mountain.
CHALLENGE: The circular space is framed by five wooden trees whose trunks interpenetrate one another, creating an experience of a dynamic forest canopy. The S-shaped table and benches in the understory seating area serve as an amenity area. The model of the house for the exhibition is set on the trunks like nests. The immersive experience of being in a forest is vivid and fun.
