| DESIGN NAME: Slanted PRIMARY FUNCTION: Chess Set INSPIRATION: Chess game represents the battle. There are winners and defeated in battle. There must be a difference between them. Slanted is designed with inspiration from this concept. Chess pieces can stand upright while they are on the chessboard, which is represented as a battlefield, and this means that they are not defeated yet in the war. When they are defeated in the game, they are taken out of the board and cannot stand in an upright position. This means that they are defeated or out of the game. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Normally, while the floor in the chess sets is flat, the squares on the Slanted table are blank. In addition, there are protrusions under the chess pieces. In this way, chess pieces can only stand upright on the chessboard. When chess pieces leave the game, they cannot stand upright on a normal surface. This symbolizes the stones they lose from the game and cannot stand upright. Thanks to this specialty of Slanted, extra symbolic value was added to the play of chess. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Slanted is ready to use when it is removed from its box. The chess pieces are placed on the chess boards and the product is ready to use and play. When the stones are placed in their place, they fit into their nests. In this way, the distance between the stones allows the user to easily take the stone he wants without damaging the other stones. When the game is finished, the product can be displayed as an accessory or collected in the box and removed to the desired place. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The product is designed in Turkey in 2019. Registration process of the design has been going on. Prototypes is started to be producing in Konya, in January 2019. PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Slanted is planned to be produced from white and sour cherry marble which is mined from Elazig, Turkey. Elazig marble is a valuable stone with its texture and strength. So, it is famous for its use in valuable products. The product can be produced easily by cutting the measured marble panels with water jet. After that, corner chamfering processes are made, and the product is ready for use. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Slanted will be packed in a flat box. The part of the box that surrounds the stones is made of vacuum plastic. A space was opened on the surface of the plastic to see the colour of the stone. The other parts of the box are cardboard. The box dimensions are 320 x 320 x 46 mm. The user can easily place the chess pieces in place and make the product ready for use. The largest stone, the king, is 60 mm and the smallest stone, the pawn, is 40 mm high. TAGS: Chess set, hobby product design, war, marble RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Chess is a strategy game that has been played since the 6th century, said to be much older. First, historical background of chess was investigated. Then, various user researches were made and the effects of chess on the user were examined. Psychological effects of chess on player were evaluated. Different research methodologies were used to develop the product. Material and production technologies of the product have been investigated and the required feasibility studies have been completed. CHALLENGE: The aim of the project was to increase the metaphoric meaning in the game of chess and to make the game more fun. Also it is aimed to use the product as an exhibition object with the simple expression of the stones in abstract forms and also made of natural stone. It can also be used as a valuable gift with the small size of the product and a box with a different design. It will be a reasonable investment for the producer because it can be manufactured easily.
