PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Chair
INSPIRATION:
The basic shape comes from the traditional circle chair, and the beauty of lines comes from wicker and calligraphy. The design is dignified and solemn, and follows the etiquette norms of Confucian literati doctors.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
The furniture evolved from the traditional circle chair to retain the frame structuree, remove the tedious decorative patterns, and present the modern concise line aesthetic feeling in the shape. The design attempts to explore the new design form under the combination of copper and wood. The most unique feature is the design of the chair ring, which adopts a unique supporting structure and smooth lines. Copper pipe is used as material, which is bended by the best craftsman.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
Chairs can be used for sitting or meditation. The chair has a large width and a low height, which can be used for moderate rest, but it is not suitable for complete relaxation like a sofa. Complete relaxation can lead to bad manners, which does not conform to the Confucian etiquette norms.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
The project started in January 2018 and finished in April 2018 in China,and was exhibited at Shenzhen Cultural Expo in April 2018.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
Copper and wood were used as the main materials. Copper is used as the material for the upper part and decoration, while wood is used as the main material for the lower part. Copper is cut, polished, oxidized, bent and inlaid by more than a dozen processes. Traditional mortise and tenon structure is used for wood connection.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
Design attempted to explore new forms of traditional furniture in the contemporary era. The works used different materials to combine and reinterpret the charm of traditional furniture through new shapes, and meet the contemporary aesthetic needs.
CHALLENGE:
The design has the most stringent requirements for the process. Especially the bending of copper pipe requires many experiments by craftsmen. Any flaw will destroy the beauty of lines. Secondly, the combination of copper and wood requires careful polishing in order to achieve a perfect combination.
