DESIGN DETAILS
DESIGN NAME:
Legacy, Sustainability

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Residence

INSPIRATION:
As the client has been well-versed in the realm of life experiences, there is an obvious need for creating a reception space of social programs, on top of its residential one, and also, this dwelling was also imbued with its unique Family Legacy characteristic, therefore, the designer has given thorough considerations in the areas of architectural design approach, interior material applications and its styling presentation, in the context of the site locale characteristics and the lifestyles of the residents.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
For the designer who has architectural background, and also many years of interior design experiences, the design was, through adopting modern design approach and material applications, able to reconstruct and interpret the Chinese construct, in terms of the overall structure, landscape design and interior layout, by infusing the Chinese sentiments of the Middle Way and warmth, while rendering it a very close connection to the lives of the residents, all in the name of Treasured Legacy.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
Through the reconstruction of the architecture work, the previously rundown old house was transformed into a new building with an exquisite landscaped view. Based on the living rituals of the inhabitants, the interior layout and circulation paths were re-thought and modified, as it becomes a modern residence that is more than capable of catering for residential and social programs.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
The project finished in February, 2018 in New Taipei City, Taiwan.

FITS BEST INTO CATEGORY:
Interior Space and Exhibition Design

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
As this project is located in Keelung, Northern Taiwan, which enjoys the location of, and of geographic intersections of mountains and ocean, so in order to accentuate such environmental conditions, the design of both interior and exterior adopts genuine rock and timber materials, such as masonry sheets, granite, Taiwan Cypress, and natural-looking art stones, as well as Ubekon stone floor, etc., echoing naturally with the surroundings.

SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES:
The area size of the overall building foot-print is 165 square meters, with the interior only taking up 66 square meters to construct a four-story house. In terms of the architectural exterior, the design approach originated from the deconstruction of the pitched roof form of Chinese Architecture, as the interior adopted an open and visually penetrating layout in framing the greenery and water elements in the landscaped garden view.

TAGS:
Chinese Zen Style, Modern Technique, Reconstruction, Landscaping, Natural Materials

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
The overall architecture design adopts the mosaic technique of collaging mason sheets of two sizes, complemented by exquisite garden landscaping design, in articulating the humility of Chinese Style cultural semantics, hence communicating the cultural legacy of the Greater Chinese tradition, as the interior is illuminated throughout with diffused lighting to ensure even illumination across the interior, as well as visual continuity.

CHALLENGE:
As the design entails three disciplines of architecture, garden landscaping, and interior design, while required to embody unique characteristics of the client, therefore there were much time and effort spent in building and decorative material selection, as the designer traveled around Taiwan to look for materials suitable for communicating the intended design vocabulary, which eventually won the approval of the client.
