DESIGN NAME: Ganzhi Calculater
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Pedant
INSPIRATION: The motivation behind this design is to make people understand the logic of how Stem and Brand work collaboratively. Some people might be questioning the necessity of the gadget and referencing why not checking it out from smartphones. In my opinion, only those eternal values are worth to be considered as treasures, which are eligible of granting a physical form such as jewelry and watch.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The sexagenary cycle has never been expressed in such a dynamic installment before. What we normally see is a huge disc-like calendar that lists up all the sixty, co-related, combinations between the Stem and the Branch Families, which can never be considered portable. This might also be the reason why it is difficult for young generations to get in touch with this abstract concept, as a result, it is diminishing.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: 1. Select a closest year of 甲子(jiǎ zǐ), which is the beginning year of a new sexagenary cycle, engraved on the side wall of the pendant such as 1684, 1744, 1804, 1864, 1924, 1984, 2044, and 2014.
2. We are now in 2019 which is between 1984 and 2044. If we use 1984 as a basis, then we can have the the formula " 2019 - 1984 = 35 ".
3. Make sure 甲(jiǎ) from the Stem-disc and 子(zǐ) from Branch-disc are on the tangent points of each circle, where we can see that 0 faces 0.
4. Rotate the discs towards "+" with three full circles, which mean it passes 30 years from 1984. The indicator also verifies it by showing that 0 faces 3.
5. Keep spinning the disc till another five Chinese characters are passed. As a result, we can find that 己(jǐ) and 亥(hài) are on the tangent point of each circle.
In addition, users can also add the Chinese zodiac year from the backside of the pendant. 2019 is the year of pig.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in October 2018 in Beijing and finished in January 2019 in Beijing.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The Ganzhi calculator is a pendant which can be used to manually convert the Gregorian year to the traditional Sexagenary cycle year. The sexagenary cycle, also known as the Stems-and-Branches or Gan Zhi, is a cycle of sixty terms used for reckoning time in China and the rest of the East Asian cultural sphere. Its use to record years began around the middle of the 3rd century BC. The cycle and its variations have been an important part of the traditional calendrical systems in Chinese-influenced Asian states and territories, particularly those of Japan, Korea, and Vietnam, with the old Chinese system still in use in Taiwan. The sexagenary cycle is used in the names of many historical events, such as the Chinese Xinhai Revolution, the Japanese Boshin War, and the Korean Imjin War. It also continues to have a role in contemporary Chinese astrology and fortune telling. "
CHALLENGE: There are two challenges of this design.
Firstly, it was tedious to test the right gear-ratios between both gears which are mounted behind the plates. Although the right ratios of gears are the multiples of 10:12, which is converted from the sum of Chinese characters engraved on each plates, it is still necessary to test each combination such as 20:24, 30: 36 and so on with different thicknesses in order to have the best balance among the comfortability of thumb's rotation, smoothness of gears' engagement and the smallest specification of whole pendant. Therefore, it is both time and cost consuming.
Second, for designer, it was in quandary while making a choice about the indication, the cycles of each decade, among Roman Arabic and Chinese numerals. As a result, the best one is Arabic numerals since it is readable globally and it looks matchable. Moreover, it saves space of the plates.
