Capella Maldives

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Interactive Media

INSPIRATION:
Apart from working closely with the client, the inspiration for design also came from the detailed study of many contributing factors such as Maldive’s geographical location and its unique features, the culture and even to a certain extent its cuisine and flora and fauna. The main target audience of this interactive media was also taken into consideration and put into thought when designing the user interface and the overall creative direction of this interactive media.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
This interactive touch screen media was developed for our client so that essential information on their upcoming development, Capella Maldives could be presented in a unique and engaging manner.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
A short opening introduction to the interactive media which tells the user the name of this new development, Capella Maldives. Users are asked to choose which language they would prefer, English or Chinese. This introduction also sets the overall mood and direction in which the resort developer wants the user or potential visitor to experience. From then on the platform transitions from screen to screen depending on which category or hot spot the users tap on the user interface. Ultimately leading the user to the information they require or are curious about Capella Maldives.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
The interactive media was designed and developed in Singapore for an upcoming development in Maldives.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
We used various software and techniques to design and produce this interactive media. Tools such as Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator and also programming software. The stunning visuals of the new resort development as seen in the interactive media were also done by VMW Group with 3D modelling and lighting software on top of our own proprietary pipelines. At its core, the Capella Maldives interactive media is powered by a full HD multi-touch panel together with a high end PC with specifications defined by VMW Group.

SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES:
Full HD multi-touch panel, as well as the flexibility to be able to be ported to an iOS application if needed. Multi language capability.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
Type of research: Applied form of research to help develop a solution for users to acquire information and data on a new resort development. Research objectives: To be able to obtain information that will assist in the creation of a comprehensive and effective overall design for an information platform. Developing an innovative and engaging interactive media for users as well as one that fulfills the client’s requirements. Research tools: A variety of tools were used such as through sources online and communicating with relevant industry professionals. Our design team also took to numerous resort design books to be able to better gauge overall moods for specific resort developments. VMW Group also looked up and spoke with subject matter experts regarding geographical locations, culture and other important factors which could affect the final design direction. Results: VMW Group was able to gain valuable and relevant information through our research process. Through this entire process, it greatly assisted us in coming up with the final iteration of our user interface and experience design for Capella Maldives interactive media.

CHALLENGE:
One of the hardest challenge that we faced was trying to get the user interface design to be in line with the visuals of Maldives and its unique demographic factors. On top of that, VMW Group faced another challenge which was to design the user interface and experience in a way that would be attractive to our client’s target audience. Not forgetting that we had to analyze the strengths and weaknesses of every design iteration to fine tune them so that we could arrive at the final.
