PRIMARY FUNCTION: Sensor Trash Can
INSPIRATION: Nature is the greatest designer in the world. It makes every masterpiece very inspirational and natural. Luna is inspired by the light of the moon. Showcasing rounded edges, the design idiom of this sensor waste bin strives for the right balance between hard and soft contours. With stainless steel metal texture, it can harmoniously blends into the house.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Luna provides consumers a brand-new experience when they throw trash:
1.The sensor-controlled lid opens swiftly and closes silently.
2.Users can actuate lid stay-open mode by hovering hand or knee.
3.With increased sensing range, users can throw trash into the can with one simple step.
4.The drain-strainer shape bottom insert is equipped with a bait compartment which attracts cockroaches but prevents children from getting in contact with the insecticides.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: 1. Put 6 AAA batteries into battery holder and then turn on power.
2. When user is within sensing range, the light turns green and the lid opens automatically. 5s later, the lid closes.
3. When debris or any part of body is hovering in sensing range for 2s, the light turns from green to blue and stay open mode actuates to keep the lid open. Hover for another 2s, stay open mode cancels and the light turns from blue to green. If not repeat hovering, the lid will close automatically in 2 min.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The product development started in Dec. 2017 and finished in July 2018 in China

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Before developing Luna, we interviewed 30 families from Southeast China. Most families mention the annoying cockroach problem and the noise when close the lid. So we learn about cockroach size, habits and study existing cockroach killing methods. Based on the findings, we design a cockroach killing bait compartment. And to achieve smooth opening and closing, we write 20 groups program parameters and conduct a user acceptance test for two months. We finally choose one to meet most users needs.
CHALLENGE: We find people hate touching dirty trash can lid to press button to keep lid open. So we develop another operation mode without touching. To achieve this function, we can add sensor. But it will lead to increased cost and standby power consumption. Thus, the difficulty we face is how to have multi sensing zones without adding sensor and keep standby electric current low. We tried different calculation methods and compared the results to find the most reasonable one in the end.
