DESIGN NAME: Spiegel Pillar
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Interactive Smart Mirror
INSPIRATION: Hyundai Department Store (World Trade Center) has been planning on a new space that lets the customers experience the new brand and get rid of the old image that was accumulated for over 20 years. Therefore Spiegel Pillar is designed as a multi-functional medium to meet these needs. To ensure both highest accessibility and usability for customers two of the Spiegel Pillar is facing the first-floor escalator where is the center of the space if someone encounters the medium, this could fully represent the Hyundai Department Store’s identity. Accordingly, we wanted to cover the outside of the pillar and place 3 sides of the medium on the inside to convey the identity of Hyundai Department Store and at the same time show how the customer is also the important element.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Spiegel Pillar is an interactive smart mirror installation. It contains three contents that the customers will experience. Sense-able Mirror mode which shows interactive contents based on gesture recognition, Info-Graphics mode which provides real-time information, and AD mode which displays newly opened brands’ advertisements. By mixing the material having a reflective surface and multi-dimensional complex medium in one structure, Spiegel Pillar can provide a new way of experience that interacts with the customers.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: First of all, Sense-able Mirror mode is to express the growth of Hyundai Department Store as identity content: The lines that follow the pillar that pours down forms a grid matrix and then it disappears after changing into a circle(dot). And the dots once again switch to faces then expands and creates a space in three dimensions. Each of the themes reacts to the customer’s moment and evolves into a new form. Secondly, Info-Graphics mode informs weather information or time and messages for customers. Time is displayed in 2-dimensional graphics way by separating(masking) the time and minute from the center line that rotates according to the center line. Weather is visualized into clear, cloud, rain, snow, wind based on dot, line, face listed by the matrix. And the message is shown by random particles that shines to the customer and it reacts to the customer’s gesture that repeats the form of disassembly and combination. Lastly, AD mode uses three sides of two pillars as an advertising environment which displays advertisement of videos and images of the newly opened brands. As videos are shown in portrait ratio that is adjusted as customer’s point of view, it is easy to express advertisements or products that are emphasized with details that use the model’s entire body which will maximize advertising effects.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Spiegel Pillar is located on the first-floor entrance of the department store which lets the customers see the three pillars first as they walk in and it is where all the cosmetic brands and luxury brands are located. Original pillars only divide customers into two which is not functional. Due to the awareness of the pillar as an obstacle, it disturbed the customers on their way and also gave visual frustration. Since the lack of space may be a problem to the customers moving around, a medium was needed that does not change the existing size and also solve the problem of visual frustration and provide excitement which would let the customers of the department store experience another level of enhancement. Therefore, we could solve this problem by installing a smart mirror. When the smart mirror is not activated, it functions as a mirror reflecting the space to the mirror to create a large spatial effect.
CHALLENGE: All kinds of billboards and banners advertising their products are pushing and dazzling the customers. Through experiencing the interaction with the media, It helps the customers to have the moment of liberation from the one-way communication (banners and advertisement) and to let them experience mutual communication.
