DESIGN NAME: Pinocchio
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Playing Cards
INSPIRATION: The inspiration for the project comes from the will to rediscover and to give voice to the original version of Pinocchio written by Carlo Collodi, marked by a deep educational value and by numerous stimulating characters. The historical novel has come up as the ideal starting point to build, through design and illustration, a storytelling dedicated to the enhancement and preservation of cultural heritage.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Pinocchio is a poker card project consisting of Sapphire, Vermilion and Collodi's decks. The custom illustration of pips, backs, figures and tuck boxes gives life to a playful product with a deep cultural meaning. The Sapphire deck focuses on the Blue Fairy and on the related positive moments, whereas Pinocchio Vermilion is dedicated to the figure of Mangiafuoco. Collodi's Pinocchio, for its part, is an innovative book-like double tuck case designed to hold both Sapphire and Vermilion cards.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The illustrations give substance to an interactive narrative puzzle that conceales behind the rules of traditional poker cards: each ace illustrates and shows the title of a chapter belonging to Pinocchio's story, and all the figures of the same seed belong to that specific moment.
Furthermore the Collodi's Edition is the complementary union of the positive and negative element within Collodi's novel, represented in the book-like box by Sapphire on the right side and Vermilion on the left one.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in March 2018 in Prato and finished in December 2018 in Prato. Between October and November 2018, Pinocchio raised on Kickstarter the 178% of the planned goal. The project is actually being printed in the U.S.A. with the endorsement of the National Carlo Collodi Foundation and will be distributed within April.

The tuck boxes of Sapphire and Vermilion are printed with hot foil on coloured paper; as for the Collodi's edition tuck box, which required the design of a custom mould and is enriched by a seal, it is printed with two different hot foils.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: The measures of Pinocchio Sapphire and Vermilion tuck boxes are 65 mm x 19 mm x 91 mm.
The measures of Collodi's Pinocchio tuck box are 65 mm x 39 mm x 91 mm.
The cards stored in the tuck boxes are 63 mm in witdth, 88 mm in height and are printed on 310 gsm air-cushioned paper.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The research that gave life to the project was both stylistic and aimed at defining chances and methods of storytelling through a leisure product such as poker cards. The research was individual and started with the analysis of multiple cultural-themed decks. It was found that most of these products use cultural bits limiting to an aesthetic result, omitting to transfer the thickness of the issue. But the narrative options offered by gaming products are many, and can be used for higher purposes.
CHALLENGE: The design of poker card decks requires all-round skills in graphic design and illustration, as well as very specific knowledge of unique media and printing techniques. With regard to the traditions related to poker cards, the total customization and illustration of the product required a long and accurate research phase. Furthermore, the will to use the structure of playing cards as a medium to storytell involved an immersive abstraction work and a profound analysis of Collodi's novel.
