DESIGN NAME: Arte Et Stile De Vita
PRIMARY FUNCTION: A Bedroom Suite
INSPIRATION: Inspired from cubism, a creative stylish opulent aesthetic space whose artistic content was exhibited with the help of line, shape, form, space, color, value and texture, resulting in a poetic compilation of luxurious, factory and custom design components. A distinctive Made-in-India version of the art form.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Regal and exclusive, geometric patterns laid out on the floor and ceiling, such that both the planes converge into a vertical acrylic screen, completing the perspective by reducing the cubist form to it’s layered geometrical equivalent module, and then connecting it with copper links to create a striking bold feature, lending the space its unique identity. The floating cantilevered bed flanked by side tables in rose gold, walnut burl and lacquer finish with the digitally printed leather headboard and the black suspension lamps encapsulate the art installation creating yet another frame.
The geometric pattern was carried forward to hand cut mirrors on large shutters to his wardrobe continuing the cubist story. The shower experience entales a state of the art body spa, the ambience with hand painted glass tiles and suspension lamps with a the luxurious grey mop and once again the geometry repeats itself to make a permanent shower mat allowing an anti skid floor.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The design was conceived by adopting the tumbling blocks, a geometric pattern on the floor and a mirror image of the same on the ceiling, creating an illusion inviting one to enjoy the spa, get into relaxed clothes and then enjoy the bedroom, to rest it out after a long day. To make it more interesting based on the natural light pouring into the space we created the three sides of the tumbling block in black Belgium, Greek thassos and Tiger’s eye. The drapes carried the shades of the patterned floor in an ombre effect.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: Project was completed in 6 months and is located in Mumbai, India.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The geometric pattern Pietra dura was executed offsite by handicraft artisans. They worked on a template, provided from site, to achieve precision of the chosen geometric module after meticulously calculating the margins required to achieve the final finished levels as were necessary for the space. The tumbling block in a cut glass form on the 1.5x2.7meter inline sliding shutters of his wardrobe , was used to a different scale and proportion to meet the aesthetic demand of the space. The glamorous mother of pearl shell was hand cut, filed and overlaid on the wardrobe shutters of her wardrobe. All interlocking planes were sketched, the above geometric patterns infused therein and the complementing materials were laid to perfection and put together to challenge conventional elitism.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: The bed suite was about a 700 square feet. The floor and ceiling element being about 20 feet long and 1.5 meter wide. The cut mirror shutters being 5 feet wide and 9.5 feet tall.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: We designed to achieve an outcome that was a stand out from the crowd. A distinctive style of cubism combined with surrealism. First the web of interlocking planes with geometric shapes were planned such that they converged into multiple viewpoints that turned into a collage once the material palate was assigned to each of the surface. Bringing out the essence of each and every subject in simultaneous vision, by eliminating the point of view distance and lighting design, were the key attributes that brought the best out of this space.
CHALLENGE: It was equally challenging to execute this dramatic space in terms of sequencing the right activities at site and assigning an appropriate material to the right surface and detail to see this Arte povera as an outcome.
