DESIGN NAME: Hope of Sarv
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Ring
INSPIRATION: In Persian culture cypress (Sarv) is a symbol, representing liberty and resistance. This iconic aspect has inspired us to design a ring, which holds the darkness of the night within itself. Then we lockdown the cypress branches on the darkness of the night and recall that we stand against anything which roots from it.
The ebony stone (Onyx), symbolizing murkiness and despair; pink opal, representing the sun, and pearl stone which stands for the moon and luminosity.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The strongest and most significant point of our design is converting a piece of our countries’ history to a wearable artefact. Besides, the swapping of the stones would give the users the opportunity to match his/her clothes and accessories in order to have a wide variation of the ring colors, which is very economical.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The ring is designed by melding nature, history & art. The nature which owns the myths and believes of a nation, such as resistance and hope thus enabling the user to make different meanings by swapping the stones.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project was initiated on September 2018 and has been finalized on January 2019 after building the prototype

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Our main goal was to design a product that is not only functional but also follows emotional design.
In recent economic crises, one thing that engaged the Iranian designers, is creating hope and encouragement in the society of Iran.
By searching in the 2500-year-old history of Iran, we concluded that people’s lives in ancient Persia, were based on hope, resistance and durability. Our findings delineate that “The Kāshmar Cypress” or “the sacred cypress of Zoroaster” was a tree which was planted by the disciples of this religion as an order of Zoroaster. At the times of its cutting, this tree had more than a thousand and four hundred years old (cut by the Abbasid Calipha) based on old tales, Asho, the Persian prophet, had brought the cypress himself from heaven and planted it on earth, by hand.
Cypress, regardless of its other features, has a good resilience to droughts but most importantly, resists against storms and hurricanes. The toughest storms break trees but cypress bends completely to the ground and never breaks. This feature is an epitome of Iranians who surrendered to the invading tribes but didn’t abandon their true identity. Furthermore, cypress durability and lifespan, in addition to pest immunity are noteworthy. Hence we used cypress in designing of this ring.
CHALLENGE: Cypress has been known in the world as the national tree of Iran. There are many tales and stories about this particular tree which made us search thoroughly for valid citation.
