DESIGN NAME: Venvstas Carbon T
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Carbon Fiber Fountain Pen
INSPIRATION: The Carbon T is made out of air, the essential, stripped to what's only really needed, stripped to the point where nothing can be added, nothing can be subtracted.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The Venvstas Carbon T is a light weight writing instrument designed mainly for sketching. It has perfect balance and weight, its resistant and offers a true minimal experience where few elements and steel and carbon are combined to give a truly expressive design piece.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: -
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The Carbon T first prototypes were designed in Paris in 2014-15 as part of a group of designs that were a research for a carbon fiber writing instrument. Initially the specific T (technique) design was a request of the DIA, Dessau Institute of Atchitecture (germany) for a special gift, but the project was never fulfilled due to high costs. As a result the design was free and to be made available via the brand Venvstas to the general public. It was presented for the first time at the 2017 Paris Design Week and has also been sold via the curated designboom web-store.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The work was focused on translating into composites some previously designed writing instruments that were made in stainless steel and/or brass or aluminium. The main idea was to incorporate to the design principles new materials, and for that, composites were chosen due to their high resistance and lightweight. The T model was the result of some specifications from the initial client, (a clip and carbon construction mainly). Eventually a clip-less version was introduced and became the standard Venvstas version. Most components are in carbon fiber, while only a lower portion is in stainless steel where needed.
CHALLENGE: The fountain pen has been continuously developed since its first prototype and keeps getting upgraded in terms of manufacturing processes and materials. Carbon fiber is a very difficult material to work with, due to tolerances and the fact that its a composite. This situation makes to have to optimize the design to make it easier for production, so its not only the design that has to fulfill certain requirements, but also the adaptation to new manufacturing processes that are also evolving with the design.
