DESIGN NAME: Jiuwu Culture City, Shenyang
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Bookstore, Shopping Mall
INSPIRATION: The designer has applied the philosophy of “book nestle” for
space design to reflect the coziness and comfort of space.
Walking in the book jungle as a “book worm”(a journey to
the “book jungle”), you will be able to enjoy a different
scenery for each different step, and feel a different value for
each different scenery. The whole space is composed of the
scenery seen in the climbing, which brings the customers
more than the enjoyment of space.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Jato Design was tasked with transforming a traditional bookstore into a dynamic, multi-use space – to be not only a shopping mall but also a cultural hub for book-inspired events and more.
The centrepice is the “hero” space where visitors move to a lighter-toned timber-putfitted environment enhanced with dramatic designs. Lantern-like cocoons hang from the ceiling while stairways serve as communal spaces that encourage visitors to linger and read while sitting on the steps.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Xunhua bookstore is a traditional brand bookstore, to maintain the original culture and integrate new youthful element would create a new design challenge. After the research and investigations, the design concept - “Tree of Cultural”, which represents “One leaf one page, One book on one tree”. In a spatial layout, the bookshelves are connected one by one, creating door portals and partition spaces. Books and cultural products are placed along the walkway, allowing people to walk through the books and embark on a natural and cultural journey.
CHALLENGE: Due to the limitation of space, it is difficult to activate and dismantle the structure of such old building. Exert the maximum functions and utilize layout on the original building structure to get the best benefit is necessary. As there are so many different types of books, we divided the bookstore into 4 levels: 24-hour bookstore, lifestyle taste, kids and youth, and ancient books.
Another big challenge is how to integrate interior with the building facade. In order to unify the design elements of the retail area and the bookstore seamlessly, we created the “V-shaped” pattern (symbolizes an opened book) as the design language on ceiling and floor pattern and connected to the façade, retail area and bookstore space with finishing materials such as wood veneer and a raw finished concrete background.
