DESIGN NAME: Almada Trumpet
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Bb Trumpet
INSPIRATION: The main goal of this project is to rise up a brass instrument, lost in time for more than 70 years. The new product development focus of heritage quality may be an opportunity to highlight and transform the production of brass instruments in Portugal. The trumpet highlights the references of red/brown colour of Oporto wine and the watermark of Portuguese jewellery. Structurally, the trumpet also picks up references from music world, such as the shapes and the geometry of some historical and international trumpet brands and, clearly, some Portuguese brands.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: This project is the result of the strategic action of a network of companies that work for the first time for the same purpose. On the other hand, this is the first time that almost all companies operate in the area of musical instruments. The trumpet presents new technical and aesthetic solutions, such as, either the use of filigree valve slides rings or the use of different layers in the product surface to adjust the sound and make it warmer. The trumpet has been produced with different processes, varying from the craft area and the 3D Print technology to the industrial process.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The trumpet is a perfectly functional instrument (tuning relative to A in the 442 Hertz).
The trumpet has been experimented and played by more than 60 national and international musicians.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The trumpet was produced, mostly, in the North of Portugal and took part as of two music concerts at Viana do Castelo (POR) and one in Agrigento (ITA). In addition, the trumpet was used in several Masterclasses of three Portuguese institutions; in the cities of Viana do Castelo, Braga and Mealhada. Finally, it was part of an event organized in the Higher School of Music of the Polytechnic of Lisbon.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The trumpet was produced with different materials and techniques: the bell, the lead-pipe and the main tuning slide were made of copper and using craft processes. The valve block (made in Italy but with Portuguese design) was made with CNC-like production systems. The nickel receiver, valve caps and piston buttons were produced with CNC lathe. Finally, the filigree slides rings were done with jewellery manual process.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: The overall dimensions of the trumpet are:
Total length of 648mm
Total height of 183mm
One-piece hand-hammered copper bell diameter 135 mm
Pipes type L- bore diameter: 11.73 mm
3 Perinet valves (Mod.Cristian Bosc)
Reverse Main Tuninig Slide
Saturn Model Waterkey

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: This trumpet is the result of a research project based on a territorial network of companies from different background. With this philosophy in mind, the trumpet demonstrates that it is possible to create complex objects.
CHALLENGE: The research challenge was focused on a territorial network of companies. On the one hand, this action combines different productive capacities. The use of copper as a raw material and the technique of working different layers in the product surface, allowed a precise, smooth, and warm sound. On the other hand, the rings in filigree add value in the production of a trumpet. Similarly, the upper parts of the finger buttons receive vstone.
