| DESIGN NAME: Erised.Desire PRIMARY FUNCTION: Reversible Ring INSPIRATION: My design is inspired by the Mirror of Erised in Harry Potter. It’s a special mirror which reflects the deepest desires of those who look at it. The ring is designed in two-sided reversible structure and can be stand alone, also like a reflective mirror. The octagonal-shaped top on the ring has a connotation of peaceful and fortunate world. The symbolic meaning of octagon also deals with: Regeneration; Totality; Infinity; Rebirth and Transition. This may be my deepest desires to the world. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: There’re two forces formed by different combinations of natural gemstones, which are all tailor-cut for the design. They may looks different in details but still, they are united to complete the ring. The two-sided reversible ring structure hopes to bring out the importance of multiple views, using jewellery as a media to interpret "Harmony in Diversity”. You can appreciate the ring in 360 degrees, and every single side will surprise you. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: There're two sides of the ring, of which various gemstones are set on different side. Simply unfold or fold the ring shanks, totally different combination of gemstones will appear. The audience can switch smoothly base on their preferences or occasions. There're many ways and angles to appreciate the work. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: This project started in Oct 2018 and finished in Jan 2019 in Hong Kong, and was exhibited in China and Hong Kong in Feb 2019. |
PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The ring was made in 18K yellow gold, set with all natural gemstones; specially tailor-cut Mother of Pearl, Lapis Lazuli and Carnelian, comes along with 54 pieces White Diamond, 25 pieces Blue Sapphire and 25 pieces Ruby. All precisely set. The mechanism of reversible ring is carefully calculate and all are handcrafted. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: The dimensions of the ring is around 20mm x 15mm x 30mm when it is standing, approximately 20mm x 56mm x 6mm when unfold. TAGS: Diversity, Harmony, Reversible Ring, Contemporary Jewellery, Natural Gemstones RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The project was started because of seeing the world with different people, different culture, different religion, different thoughts..etc. Can we get along harmoniously by respecting each other if our world is getting more modernised? Seeking ways to break through the standard idea of a ring structure, this ring is made with mechanism, showing different beauty from every aspects. By merging two different kind of tailor-cut stone, which fails for more than times, to set them perfectly on the ring. Combining simplicity and complexity, a jewellery more than only a jewellery. CHALLENGE: The hardest part of this design is to calculate the correct angle and mechanism to make the ring reverse smoothly, also to tailor-cut and merge two different kinds of natural gemstones to set in. Named after Paradises in Greek, the brandname has a connotation of hanging garden, paradise or heaven - an enchanting place of colours, beauty, hopes, dreams and inspirations. We aspire to introduce the underlying beauty of the undervalued gemstones to a wider audience through our creations. Our belief is to balance the style of the traditional jewellery market and the youthful fast fashion market. We are dedicated in creating wearable art pieces crafted from natural gemstones that are utterly unique and luxurious but with a competitive price. The gemstone incorporate “simplicity” as the main design concept and is cleverly accompanied and styled with dots, lines, and geometric shapes and structures. |
