| DESIGN NAME: Chinese Health Light PRIMARY FUNCTION: Anti Neurodegeneration Lamp INSPIRATION: Inspired the famous Chinese saying: 'A tweet wakes the dreaming one.' The sculptural design aims to preserve diminishing craftsmanship of traditional bird cage with a contemporary improvisation. It resemble the collective memory of aged people for relieving Alzheimer's Disease. The design hopes to bring a bold propaganda of our cultural heritage as well as awareness to elderly through the seamless assimilation between modern technology and traditional craftsmanship. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: In Asia, there's a tradition for men bringing their Acacia Bird in crafted bird cages to parks and mingle with others. The cages serve as social beacons for interaction. This retrofit resin 3Dprinted birdcage aims to relieve Alzheimer's Disease progression via triggering social mingling and story telling by elderly in aged homes and not just bringing a luminous point. The luminarie recalls the social beacons in park, a motion sensor gives sounds of birds, providing a multi sensory experience. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The LED circular array light allows 3 different color temperature (2700K, 4000K, 5000K) illuminations to fit into different interior and exterior spatial settings. The temperature can be changed at the single switch control. The lamp also has a motion sensor that trigger 10 variety tweet sounds of Acacia Bird commonly found in parks. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: Due to the short allowed time frame by the commissioner, the whole project was completed in only 9 months. 3 months for concept and formal exportation, 4 months on material and manufacture study and lastly 2 months of production time. PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Traditional wooden Acacia Bird Cage, transparent resin Stereolithography 3D printing technology SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: The size is 30cm(W) x 57cm(H) x 30cm(D). TAGS: light, bird, chinese, oriental, cage, LED, wood RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The main challenge is to strike a balance between preserving traditional craftsmanship and retrofitting the correct contemporary technology seamlessly. Through repeated material trials and manufacture process research, transparent resin SLA 3D printing was found to be ideal for both light transmittance and stability plus manufacture feasibility. CHALLENGE: Our vision was to provide a sculptural decorative piece that would also provide a health improvement to Alzheimer's Disease elderly. Fusing traditional Chinese bird cage craftsmanship with 3D scanning and 3D printing techniques, to create a mignal focus point cum art piece with dual health benefits. The biggest challenge was the electronic part which had to be concealed in a balanced way under the limited space of the underside compartment of the cage.
