| DESIGN NAME: NEPTO - Shield PRIMARY FUNCTION: Watch INSPIRATION: The visual and artistic experiences shared during trips, exchanges around the world and visits to major art and design venues allowed us to see the immense aesthetic wealth everywhere around us and animated us to express it within our watches. This design was inspired by the Paris coat of arms, the symbol of the powerful corporate body of the Marchands de l'eau ("water merchants"). UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The complexity of a watch's aesthetics is to make it visible through its design and shape while integrating it perfectly into the person's clothing style. This is why we paid close attention to the shape of the case itself, which will instantly differentiate it from other brands. This design brings some originality to classic watches shapes and empowered people wearing it. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: It operates as a standard quartz watch. But the design is totally different and bring some originality into the watch industry. It brings a specific aspect on the wrist of his owner, the lines of the watch are recalling something new on the silhouette. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in February 2018 in Berlin and finished in December 2018 in Paris with the reception of the final product. |
PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Our major points were to have a light watch, fine and comfortable, with a different shape than circle or square and a minimalistic dial. From that, we started to draw elegant shapes. We first started to do some 3D printing production in plastic, then in stainless steel to confirm the shape and proportion of the case. We decided to go for stainless steel because of the extra light quartz movement. For the glass we chose the K1 for the really good property ratio of this material. The hardness of this K1 glass is way better than a classic mineral glass due to a chemical treatment applied at the end of the creation process. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Case diameter 40mm Case thickness 7mm Materials 316L solid stainless steel Lens K1 glass Weight 50g TAGS: watch, shield, minimalist, blue ocean, nepto RESEARCH ABSTRACT: We conducted some research on the history of watches to better understand the evolution of the timekeepers and the different aspects of these fascinating tools. As time is in the center of our product, we wanted to connect form and duration and work on a different shape of time. The artistic approach was really important for us but we also needed to make sure that we could start a business out of the vision we were having. For the design itself, being French and coming from Paris had a huge impact on our design inspiration, the coat of arms of Paris means a lot to us. CHALLENGE: The hardest part was to build specific tooling to create watches with this specific design. It required a lot of attention to details and research about the characteristics of the materials.
