DESIGN NAME: Liquid
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Table
INSPIRATION: The project was created at Howest University, Kortrijk, Belgium. The assignment was: design a light and strong table. My goal was to design a recognizable modern dining table with an innovative look, that's light in appearance and physically strong. The design of the table was inspired by the dynamic and fluid structures found in nature. By combining these goals and inspirational sources with my own design style, Liquid was formed.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Liquid is a light and strong modern table design that creates a lightweight impression through its soft lines and ultrathin profile. Due to the metal finish and the design language of the pleated corners, the design radiates the solidity of steel. By choosing high-quality Epoxy fortified with E-fiber Glass, not only does the table look lightweight, it only weighs 14 kilos. As a result of this and its timeless design, you can easily move it around in every space.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: With its powerful elegance and distinctive modern look, this multifunctional table can be the centerpiece of your workplace or living room for many years. It can literally support all your activities.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project was designed and completed in 2 weeks in April 2018 at Howest University, Kortrijk, Belgium. The project was online publicized on Student Design on July 6 and on Studio Arkhi on July 20, 2018.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Liquid is made out of high-quality Epoxy fortified with E-fiber Glass with a weight of 14 kilos.
Because of the continuous innovations in our world, designs that were difficult to manufacture in the past have become manufacturable and affordable. The Liquid table design makes use of these advanced manufacturing possibilities that are available today.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: I knowingly did not do any research at the beginning of the project. I started by brainstorming and imagining what I believe should be the solution based on what I believe is a logical solution. Generating concepts and ideas before doing any research provides me with unique insights and ideas. Extensive research was performed after the first brainstorm in the existing markets of furniture, the target audience and their context, current manufacturing possibilities, and material research. After I decided on the final concept, advanced simulations were performed to calculate the forces on the table and the required material properties.
CHALLENGE: There are already plenty of table designs, creating another one that's meaningful was challenging. I quickly came to an idea of how the table would look, but finding a relevant use case was challenging. After additional research, I arrived at a modern table design that was physically strong, yet lightweight and therefore could be used for multiple purposes in which its lightweight was an important and useful feature.
