DESIGN NAME: Ideal
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Combine Harvester
INSPIRATION: Agco’s vision is to provide innovative high tech solutions for farmers feeding the world, ensuring profitable growth through an efficient customer service, innovation, quality and commitment. Drivers of the Ideal project were customers’ demand for efficiency, versatility, reliability, ease of use, simple interface and controls, automation, grain and straw quality.
Ideal is a revolutionary, powerful combine, able to respond to the customers’ needs worldwide. Brands: Massey Ferguson®, Fendt®.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Ideal is Agco’s new platform of combine harvesters providing innovation, quality and growth to farmers. Ideal, the first high capacity combine with a narrow body, offers full connectivity, a complete, automated adjustment, Real Time Crop Flow visualization and a very efficient processing system. It outperforms on grain and straw quality, grain handling, power efficiency, capacity and optimization of complex harvesting operations with ease of use, comfort and a unique style.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Ideal’s unique features offer outstanding performances: the longest rotors provide superior straw and grain quality, its biggest grain tank and the highest unloading rate in the market save time and money; automatic identification of the crop flow thanks to special sensors grants a constant and high throughput. Idealharvest makes Ideal a full self adjusting combine: machine sets all harvesting parameters according to the target decided on the iPad which also provides real time crop visualization
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The concept was defined and validated in 2011. It was approved by Senior Product Committee in 2012 and a Core Team was settled for a global combine strategy. In 2013 the module concept was developed and mule testing started. In 2014 the product classes scope was defined, followed by Ideal alignment meetings and the new product specifications. From 2015 to 2017 several stages of prototypes were built in different Agco plants with global field testing every year. Start of production was in 2018.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Agco started from a clean sheet of paper involving all functions worldwide to ensure results: Engineering, Quality, Manufacturing, Service, Product Management, Parts, Marketing, Purchasing, Finance and IT. Ideal will be produced in 3 plants with a common platform, tooling and common suppliers for a global strategy. A new Flexible Manufacturing System for welding was implemented and work instructions are managed through a Team Centre system, according to the machine sequence in the assembly line.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Width: from 3300 mm to 4000 mm depending on tyre type
Depth with unloading auger: open 15500 mm, closed 12000 mm
Height with grain tank extensions: open 5000 mm, closed 4000 mm

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Strengths of competitor machines were analyzed to compare and improve the Ideal project, especially concerning the cleaning system and the processor. Components and modules were subject to rigorous stress tests in specific test benches worldwide. Dynamic fluid simulations were performed with Technical University Dresden to improve overall performance and reliability. Strain gages and transducers were installed to measure loads and many parameters directly in the field and with telemetry.
CHALLENGE: The biggest creative challenge in the Ideal project was to realize a combine meant to be the benchmark in the market both for performances and dimensions. Part of this challenge was also putting together different teams from all over the world, with diverse cultures and ISO metrics and come up with a common design able to outperform in all markets worldwide considering specific requirements: customer needs, quality, technical features, field requirements, soil conditions, road homologations.
