DESIGN NAME: Cukurcuma Armchair
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Armchair
INSPIRATION: While walking in the beautiful mystical streets of Cukurcuma, a soho like spot in Istanbul with buildings dating back to twelve hundred's left from the byzantine empire filled with antique shops, art galleries and handcrafted accessory stores gave me the inspiration to design an armchair that is a blend of history and present. I decided to make an armchair with antique wood from 1830 to signify the history. I also wanted to design an armchair for today. An armchair that is stylish cool and comfortable.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The particular n-shape designed legs carry the load while making it possible to be used as arm rests. Another unique feature of Cukurcuma Armchair is the wood that has been used which is an antique oak wood dating back to 1830 which signifies the historical Cukurcuma, an old part of Istanbul. It's special designed cushions looking like bags/pouches enables the seater to experience relaxation due to softness and form. The cushioning for the back supports the spine and the neck for maximum comfort
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The unique n-shape legs of the armchair also function as armrests. The design is based on comforting the human body. The pouches/bags are specifically designed to relax the spine by enabling an optimum position for the back and the neck. The pouches/bags on the seating area relax the legs and the hip. The angle of the seating and the back rest of cukurcuma armchair uses gravity for the body to let go.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The Project started in March 2018 in Istanbul and finished in December 2018 in Istanbul.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The n-shaped legs are made of 190 year old antique oak wood that is completely handcrafted. The back rest and seating is structured with wood. Inside the armchair elastic bands and soft cushioning is used. On top of it sits the pouches/bags which a semi soft type of cushioning is used. All the pouches/bags had to be done seperately and then installed on the armchair to their very specific locations to enable maximum comfort. The bolt looking handles are all made of brass
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Width 1000 mm x Depth 650 mm X Height 900 mm

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: We are living in an age where health and happiness is of great importance. Cukurcuma Armchair is a design that cares for the human health. A lot of research was done to learn the fundamentals of comfort for human body. Interviewed orthopedic doctors and physical therapists to understand how the spinal cord works and which positions relax the spine and the neck. The idea of designing pouches/bags was formed to maximize comfort for the specific parts of the body as well as ease the stress on the spinal cord.
CHALLENGE: The challange was to come up with a design that relaxes the human body, eases the stress on the spinal cord and blends history with present. For maximum comfort two different types of cushioning was used inside the pouches/bags as well as inside the base of the armchair. The form of the n-shape legs which signifies history was a challange because, it needed to also work as arm rests. Getting the 190 years old antique wood to n-shape form needed great attention and work
