DESIGN NAME: Moonshine
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Jewelry
INSPIRATION: I was inspired by the painting called The Great Wave off Kanagawa by Katsushika Hokusai. Particularly inspired by the movements of the wave in the painting. I chose sapphires to represent the wave, both in light and dark blue to show the tones of the ocean. The pear shaped yellow sapphire not only gives the earrings the vision of movements but also represents the moon. In Chinese culture moon always means reunion, so the earrings represent good memories.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: These earrings are made of 18K gold, colored sapphires and diamonds. The pear shaped yellow sapphire is dangling in the center of the circle which gives the earring a vision of movements. There are very elegant pieces which high quality of stones.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: It goes very well with evening dresses but it also can be a daily wear jewelry piece.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in June 2018 and finished in July 2018 in China.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: This design was based on the inspiration from The Great Wave off Kanagawa by Katsushika Hokusai. I did research about this painting as well as Japanese culture at that time through google and wiki pedia. When it came to the materials I read some gemology books to find the right fit for the stones. Then I found the sapphires which came in multicolor by nature.
CHALLENGE: The hardest part of this design activity was to get the proper size of the earring, I've tried a few sizes and then to pick the right color of stones was a little bit challenging too.
