DESIGN DETAILS
DESIGN NAME:
Lisbon Under Stars

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Immersive Light Show

INSPIRATION:
OCUBO felt the urge to present this virtual journey through 600 years of Portuguese history the show during the European Year of Cultural Heritage. An audiovisual immersive experience, whose creative idea is to bring life to the Church, assuming it as the principal character. Here we can witness the history of a country in one of the monuments that represents timelessness, enriched with the participation of Portuguese artists from diverse fields of arts, which gave the show a special sensibility.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
This is a multidisciplinary project that gathered multimedia projections, virtual dancers and visual effects on the walls of the church, which have been transformed into three dimensional screens. They became a home for dancers, singers, painters and multimedia artists, which have been filmed in studio, and transformed in coherent multimedia work. Another specific was that the public can move freely around location and see the show from different perspectives, making an experience unique to each visitor.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
The show was designed as an immersive spectacle to be enjoyed 360º positioning the public in the center of the main nave of Carmo’s Church. There were no marked places to allow visitors to move freely around the space, enjoying the show from several points of view. Some visitors also enjoyed sitting or lying on the floor, experienced really under the stars. For this it was extremely important to leave the space free of equipment allowing the public to freely navigate through space and experience.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
The project took about 2 months and half to be produce and more than 100 persons were involved in the process, both creative animation and production team Lisbon Under Stars was presented to the public from 3rd May 2018 until 30th June 2018, with two night sessions from Monday to Saturday. The venue for the show was Carmo’s Church, Lisbon, Portugal. Lisbon Under Stars will be also on display also in 2019.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
The show was scripted, filmed, edited and produced by OCUBO team. The production applied several techniques that are used and featured in movie industry to the field of video mapping. The show required a use of 13 projectors, which is one of the largest shows OCUBO has produced in Portugal.

SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES:
According to an analysis done for the placement of projectors, a total of 13 16k Lumens Video Projectors were used, knowing how the perspective of the image produced by each would create distortion on the surfaces. The monument is replete with carved elements into the wall where the image should fit perfectly. The public's perspective on the show was taken into consideration and all the filming, done in chroma studio, was made with the camera positioned on the ground and pointed upwards.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
Collaborating with historians of Carmo Museum, providing documentation and access to the archive, that helped with the history of Carmo Museum through time and with the history of Lisbon/Portugal. We gathered with the best dance school and choreographer to create an engaging show led by the dancers. The protagonist character is the church itself represented metaphorically by a woman. Analysing which portuguese musicians had the most memorable music and represented the spirit of portuguese people.

CHALLENGE:
Create a storyline that enlightened the 600 years narrative in an accessible way to a wide range of public. Another challenge was to create a bilingual show without being too heavy, as well as keeping the narration in a voice of poetry, but telling historical facts. Lisbon Under Stars was a challenge for a company, that offered the first paid video mapping immersive show in Portugal.
