DESIGN NAME: Enteroctopus
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Jewellery Design
INSPIRATION: Inspired by the Giant Pacific Octopus (Enteroctopus Dofleini) and part of the collection Caerula (Latin for deep blue). The collection was first inspired by a trip to Ripley's Aquarium of Canada where I witnessed so many wondrous and beautiful deep sea creatures firsthand. They were breathing and moving so naturally in their habitat, suspended in space in a world so different from ours and each so distinct in its existence.
Through this collection, I want to provide a window into depths beyond our human reach. The piece also melds influences from African textile patterns, Moroccan art, French renaissance ceiling paintings, Italian renaissance faience plates, Gothic wood inlays and Byzantine mosaic patterns. Transcending cultures, space and time, I hope to encapsulate the beauty of nature in a timeless piece marked by geometry play and bold and accented forms and promote its protection.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Experience the glamour and sophistication in our exquisitely designed choker. Black onyx are bezel set and line the neckline. The extraordinary architecture of the piece combines organic inspiration with balance and precision. The structural integrity of this wearable art is maintained whilst incorporating flexibility, wearability and durability into the design.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The necklace is opened slightly and worn around the neck. The clasp at the back fastens the center piece and the frame is held firmly against the neckline.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: Project started in 2016 and was produced in 2017. It was recently featured in the Tatler UK 2019 Spring Collection.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Silver crafted in 18K Yellow Gold. Black Onyx stones.
Elements of the design was first drawn 2 dimensionally on paper. They were then assembled and a paper prototype of the product was created and measured while wrapping around the neck. Gemstones were then chosen based on colour, opacity and cut. A 3D design was created, taking into account the depth of the stones, their distance from the neck and bezel setting and broke the continuous choker design into 5 separate movable parts. An adjustable clasp was designed to fit the sculptural piece against the neck securely and comfortably.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: 32.5cm long, 2.5cm wide and 3mm thick with adjustable clasp at the back.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Studied deep sea creatures through sketching them and understanding their geometrical forms and unique shapes. Pieced these shapes together through experimenting with different combinations and permutations. Curated designs for production based on criteria such as uniqueness, market trends and overall feel of the collection. Research was then needed to investigate the appropriate materials to be used and a literary haiku was written to accompany the product and convey its essence.
CHALLENGE: Maintaining a frame around the neck and including flexibility into the design without breaking up the shape and overall design excessively.
