DESIGN NAME: Opulent 30
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Residential Penthouse
INSPIRATION: In Malaysia, people are accustomed to a very conventional design approach - which is usually a collective of jumbled up ideas mainly due to our unique multi-racial community of very different histories and cultures. In this project, the ultimate dream is to advance our localized design and bring that up to par with international standard so it can be widely known as a Malaysian original design. This is a product of a modern oriental design infused with the mixed cultures of Malaysians.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The brief, the uniqueness of the open floor plan and the luxury of space given in this project required a unique approach, unlike other projects. Special meanings are given to each space by designing them to be picked up by the sub-conscious mind that each individual space exudes a character of its own yet connected by a string of design details, finishes or ambience.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Firstly, they were the ideas and designs of the colours, patterns and the client's love for having animals, though not necessarily of Chinese zodiac nature infused in to the design. Next, it was necessary to run through the details to bring out the luxury and level of sophistication intended for this project by inputting opulent material such as natural marble, brushed metal stainless steel, carefully placed ambient lighting within the built-in works and lastly a pinch of modern material such as textured plaster wall finish and coloured mirrors to bring modernity into the space.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: This penthouse is of 3,600 sqft built-up with 4+1 bedrooms and 5 baths.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The colours and patterns picked are unique to represent the different 'chi' of the different characters that will occupy this penthouse. A 'feng shui' master was consulted to determine the colours, material and even animals that would benefit the occupants.
CHALLENGE: The challenge, as with everything else that has to be with design in Malaysia, is to establish a style that is truly Malaysian. It had to be a representation of what the culture is for the client who are likely to be 2nd or 3rd generation of Chinese immigrants, and naturally evolved to be different from the ancestors.
Being Malaysian, there is a struggle to align identity and ultimately end up finding solace best by coming up with our very own. This design reflects that struggle and victory at the end by moving away from the traditional approach, instead utilizing what natural resources and products available and constructed by localized craftsmanship and knowledge brought down by the forefathers.
