DESIGN DETAILS
DESIGN NAME:
Moo

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Multifunctional Holder

INSPIRATION:
I always find ambiguous forms intriguing since they could be nothing or everything. My goal is to create an object with a kind of known unknown form, which is both deeply familiar and unprescribed and will find its' identity by asking people engaged with it to create, at the moment, whatever identity and relationship might arise. In addition to these, as it is defined by a common reliance on hypothetical users, the object will not impose a closed set of values.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
Moo is a multifunctional object that is created to be used at different scenes. It can be holder, paperweight, table sculpture, toy or massager, and the function of it depends on users' imaginations.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
I assume holder would be the first possible usage of this object that comes through our mind because there is a clear indication that the four bumps could potentially support something. The design of bulges on top and bottom concavity makes several of it possible to be piled up together stably in different ways for different purposes. This object could also be used as a paperweight, table sculpture, toy or massager, but the usage of it will not be limited to these.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
The project was done in March 2018 at Cranbrook Academy of Art

FITS BEST INTO CATEGORY:
Furniture, Decorative Items and Homeware Design

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
Maple Wood CNC

SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES:
Dimension: L 89mm, W 89mm, H 72mm

TAGS:
product, holder, paperweight, sculpture, toy, massager

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
Functionality is usually considered ahead of everything else in product design, and form follows function seems to be an approved principle, but I can definitely see the idea of function follows form to be another direction. Needless to say, the concept of function follows form is not applicable to technological devices and tools for special using context, which need clear indication to be used properly and efficiently, but life is more than that. Surrounded by precise instructions all the time, ambiguity could probably be a flavoring for us. While there are always wrong ways to use a product, any behavior showed by people interacting with an ambiguous object would not be considered wrong because it invites you to behave however you feel like.

CHALLENGE:
This object was designed to fulfill playfulness and functionality at the same time, and it is also my attempt to blur the boundary between art and design. I was inspired by organic forms found in nature, but hoping to make the shape of the object looks more organized and structured while still remain its’ organic quality through methods of design, which is a challenge for me.
