DESIGN NAME: Bonding
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Stool
INSPIRATION: Critical Design principles form a modern, simple and symbolic item, which has the purpose of criticizing the social alienation of modern-day people.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Bonding is an atypical two-person seat. In addition to creating impressions and challenging debates, Bonding becomes a functional object under one condition, the simultaneous use by two people collaborating with each other. Specifically, one needs to search for a second person in order to use the seat. Otherwise, in a more selfish behavior, the system’s center of mass is outside the base area and the seat tumbles.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The user needs to interact with the object in collaboration with another person. If one user tries to use Bonding alone, the stool will collapse due to imbalanced weight distribution. In that way, the user is "pushed" to seek for a collaborator.
Because of the item's finishing and connection, it is possible to stack the individual pieces and to assemble the item on site at the installation place.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project's duration was two months concluding in the end of January 2019. Its origin location is shared between Athens, Greece and Copenhagen, Denmark.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The item is composed by two identical seats that converge to one another and a bond that holds them together. All metal parts are manufactured by bending 7mm thick steel sheets. This forming process allows an easy construction at a low cost. The individual parts are coated electrostatically in two different colors. Their connection is made through six discrete, milled screws in a triangular configuration. The edges that touch the ground are coated with silicone.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: As far as the technical aspect is concerned, the item's functionality was tested through a simulation of a static study. In particular, by applying force equal to 150 kilos of mass, the maximum displacement at the edge of the seat is less than 1.5 centimeters (acceptable) and the maximum created stress is much smaller than the yield point. The object' s dimensions are 970 mm x 300 mm x 430 mm. The item's total mass is approximately calculated to be 30 kilos.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Although Critical Design is a field not thoroughly researched, with underdeveloped methodology, it can be argued that it can be a source of innovation, by provoking new ideas about products and services. That was the main goal of this project - to make a social statement about human alienation. At the same time, functionality was a crucial element. This is why simulations of static studies were conducted in an experimental scheme in order to converge to the ideal material selection.
CHALLENGE: Although the main idea is supported by designing something controversial that is not functional every time, ergonomics and manufacturability were crucial aspects of the concept development. The goal was to create a product that is usable and could be eventually produced. The material selection and the sheet thickness decision were challenging in order to achieve the desired functionality. However, with the help of simulated static studies, ergonomics rules and inquiries to manufacturing companies, those challenges were tackled and the uncertainty was reduced.
