| DESIGN NAME: Bauhaus PRIMARY FUNCTION: Wrist Watch INSPIRATION: Bauhaus was envisioned to be elemental and yet, bold; an effortless blend of elegance with simplicity. While extracting elements from the Miesian style such as clean lines and a minimal framework, the timepiece expands on the concept by defying symmetry and conformity with subtle elements. The little breaks in consistency creates a final model that exudes versatility and boldness. It is a respectful understanding of the past while fiercely defining the future. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The watch was conceived with a rebellious goal in mind: to challenge the status quo of the fashion watch industry pricing model. It embraces the power of design with a thoughtful expression of urban minimalism while integrating a simple business model to create a successful consumer product that does not rely on premium price tags. The desire in changing the natural order of the world filters through every step of the process: design, materials, production and delivery. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The watch can be set using the crown. One pull to the first step or click to set the date on the subdial. PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Bauhaus is made of surgical grade 316L stainless steel coated through a physical vapor deposition process which makes the final piece extremely resistant to corrosion, scratches and dings; the 5ATM/50M water resistance rate allows it to be submerged in water without internal damage; and the innovative quick release system in every All Mies strap, enables an easy and quick change of style in a matter of seconds. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Case: 41mm case made of surgical grade 316L stainless steel coated through physical vapor deposition process. Movement: Seiko VD72 quartz movement with date function. Strap: 20mm with interchangeable quick release system. Every product and packaging are created to be simple and bold by embracing clean lines and a minimalist approach. All designs are generated through the understanding of its function. Tying the functionality of a piece to the establishment of its design enables the whole concept to achieve a holistic approach. CHALLENGE: In order to achieve a high-end design watch following industry quality standards with an affordable final price tag to our consumers, we had to strategically rethink design to delivery as a whole. The Bauhaus model dictates form as much as it lets form follows function. By simultaneously laying out concept and manufacturing processes, a powerful synergy is created, allowing ideas and product development to be symmetrically aligned to design and financial parameters. NAME: All Mies PROFILE: All Mies was created from the frustration of great design products always having premium price tags. The startup came to life as Walmir Luz became aware of how brands were astronomically marking up watches based on lifestyle trends. Quality and design had barely anything to do with the final price of an item. With a background in design and as part of a generation troubled with student loans, Walmir took this opportunity to not only hassle to create a second source of income to deal with his own student loans debt but to also use his skills to revolutionize the retail industry pricing model. Inspired by the book “It Takes a Tribe” by Will Dean, Walmir teamed up with Philip Paul to defy the status quo and develop a business strategy that could achieve the same or higher quality standards of famous brands without the traditional retail markup. Today, All Mies relies on high quality materials, acclaimed watch movements and refined designs to manufacture premium watches at an affordable price, ultimately proving that great design doesn’t need to be elitist. |
